Problem with StealthFollow

#1 Dec 08 2008 at 6:47 AM Rating: Decent
I encountered something extremely aggravating yesterday. I lost stealth
inexplicably more in one day than in the previous 9 months put together
on two different 70+ Druids. These were all to mobs of equal or lower
level.

The place was the Scarlet Onslaught area in Dragonblight, south of
Venomspite. This Druid is a Level 72 Balance spec. My other Druid is
Feral specc'ed, level 77, and did this area with no problems at Level
73. I am perplexed. The one level difference should not be causing
this but it's the only thing that I am aware of that could be doing it.

Can anyone shed some light here ?

You probably have the talent 'feral instinct' as feral and not as balance. Which will increase your stealth level by 3 if maxed. That means that for mobs of equal level that you are within close range/in frontal cone with, you have a +3 level bonus to the mobs spotting skill...

Not to mention you being accustomed to stealthing in close with this talent and now as a balance you need to increase that distance a bit...

Ummm.. Having Feral Instinct on your feral druid, but most likely not with a Balance spec?

Well you all are correct about Feral Instinct. This build does not
have it. And quite frankly I thought it worked somewhat differently.
Perhaps I was using stealth here more aggressively here than I had
in earlier play.

I was careful to stay away from higher level mobs but if I understand
the first responder an equal level mob can detect me if I get too
close.

Yes, im not sure on the exact math, but you can search the internet for it.

What i remember is that even lower levels can see stealth depending on distance to target, if the target is in front of you (180 degrees cone or something) and time. Then there are items and talents that increase someones stealth level by 1 level or more as if they were a level higher themselves. This influences the spot-check so that there is a better chance of you staying undetected.

If you have no feral instinct talent and you stealth around in front of a mob, the distance to it and time you stay in that location determines of it is going to spot you. If you are lower level or the mob/player has stealthdetection bonusses its chances increase to spot you, if you have feral instinct your chances increase of staying undetected and thus you can move in closer.

If you are in stealth and sit still long enough just in front of a lower level mob, it will still spot you at some point.

If you are level 1 and sneak up behind a level 80, the level 80 won't spot you, because you are not in his front (180 cone).

If you and the target are equal level 70 and you have 3/3 feral instinct, but the target has +2 stealhdetection, it will be as if you are a level 73 stealth and he is level 72.

Full talent gives stealth as though you are 3 levels higher than your real level...

That's on top of the +1 level worth of stealthiness that Night Elves get from the "Elusiveness" racial.
OP, are both of your druids the same race? If the feral is nelf and the balance is tauren that's another factor.

It seemed to me that WotLK mobs in general were far less forgiving of stealthed players. My feral seems to get spotted a little easier, but it's easy enough to avoid if you're cautious.
