Have seen a few hunters now dual wielding that are at 80 and either are starting to work on their raid gear or have started to raid. Is that simply because there are better stats available then were open to us in BC?

Dual Wielding has never been "worse" than using a 2h. You just simply should use whatever weapon(s) have the best stats available at the time. Besides, there is a BoE 1h, Savage Cobalt Slicer or something, and it is available at 74 and has great stats.

The Cobalt Slicers are stupidly good. The only difference between those level 74 weapons and the level 80 weapons from heroics is stamina. Well, the slicers even give a little more AP. The only reason I'm not using them is because I got the heroics weapons for free, and I don't want to spend 150g for each hand to get less than 10 more AP.

So it's a mix between the fact that the slicers are just so good, and there really aren't any better 2h options until Naxx.

Oh, and I think I was told today that the slicers are still low enough level to use Mana oils on. Can anyone confirm?

That greatly depends on your gear mix. If you are not desperatly in need of more hit, then there are good alternatives. I currently use a Runeblade of Demonstrable Power which I like a bit more.
Now I only have to hope for some good weapons from Naxx since I don't like blue items *giggles*

umm call me a noob or whatever but arent hunters supposed to work mobs over at range?

seriously now.....

given i havent fully looked over the weapons but shouldnt your melee weaps jus compliment your ranged dps and max it out

Hehe, so I call you a noob *giggles*.
You are correct that hunters almost exclusively use their ranged weapons to deal damage.
We are talking about melee weapons because of the stats on them.
Those stats work for our ranged damage. This means that you can totally ignore things like DPS, damage range, weapon speed and procs on melee weapons but you have to look for the stats on those weapons like hit rating, crit rating, agility, attackpower and for some specs haste rating.

If the stats between your Dualwielding option and Twohander option are equal, go for Twohander. This because of our melee capability is low to begin with, and that one Raptor Strike we use before we WC->Disengage should be big. But as soon as the stats say otherwise, go dualwielding. Ranged stats will in every single case be more important than melee capability.

This.

I am dripping with hit right now. Argent crusade rep gear will give you ungodly hit with boot and glove enchant.

I too cannot get a drop to replace the rep sword. But I do have the bow from 10 man and the crossbow from 25 man, so I cannot really complain.

What about enchants, though?

Even if the unenchanted stats are equal, I've always heard that Hunters should go for dual-wielding simply because they get more benefit from the two one-hander enchants than from one two-hander enchant. (This may have changed for WotLK though, I haven't looked at the two-hander enchants available at all yet.) A two-hander might be better for PvP or other situations where you end up in melee more than you would like, but when you're raiding if you're in melee range generally you're doing something terribly terribly wrong, or it's only temporary and you don't need to worry about it too much, like the eagle boss in ZA.

If you multiply the stats for 1h enchants by two, it is generally a bit higher than its 2h counterpart. Example in WotLK would be the AP enchants. You can either get 60 AP to a 1h weapon (120 total), or if you have a 2h weapon, you can get 110 AP. If the stats on the 2h vs 1hs are the same, you should take the enchants into consideration since you'll get 10 more AP out of the dual wielding.

Although, historically, 2h weapons have always had slightly more stats allocated to them than 2 1h weapons. It's not necessarily better, they just had a few more points for blizzard to play around with.

And all things being relative...

At level 80, 10 more AP is about bobkis in any final numbers. Whatever it would give would probably be about equal to what you might get from a raptor strike in an "Oh Crap" melee moment.

Either way, it's about all equal at level 80. There are other level ranges that favor one way or the other depending on what you are doing with the toon. I'm with North logic-wise (scary- I know! ^_^), but actually, it's whatever blows your skirt unless you are mini-maxer. I don't think anyone will bounce on your suitcase hard as long as you show up prepared and competent in a group with decent defendable weapon(s) and enchat(s) on it/them.
