Have been away from my addiction for about 2 months but have kept up a little with all the changes that have taken place as well as with the new expansion. My question is even after looking briefly at the FAQ page, is combat swords dead?

As a rogue I leveled and loved combat swords, but from what I've seen in both the FAQ page here and briefly skimming through the various rewards on different sites that you can get from quests and drops I just don't see any decent 1h swords, but more daggers and fist weapons. So am I just out of luck and need to turn in my lovely merc swords that seemed to take forever to get and pick up a nice pair of fist weapons or daggers?

It's not dead, but with the consolidation of fist and dagger specializations, and moving them up the combat tree, fist/dagger specs will be slightly ahead. Notice that's not fist and dagger specs. Fist MH, dagger OH.

Combat Swords is still perfectly viable, you just need to find the swords to use it with which is a bit harder in LK.

Basically until you're raiding and get a bunch of epix to compare between, you probably can let your loot rolls dictate which you go. :P

I got myself an epic drop 'greed' so I'm fist/dagger atm. If I got a sweet sword, I'd have gone sword.

blue daggers from AH with mute spec will outdps most pre-naxx weapons both mute and combat spec.

Maybe in the future they will add more items for us and fix our specs a little. We'll see what it is at that point, but until then that's pretty much how it is.

Assassination was coming out as #1, but there was a bug in it too which was hotfixed. I don't think it made assassination a lot worse, its probably closer to combat (and apparently sub is doing pretty decent in large raids too).
I haven't seen any numbers on it though.

Right now in optimal simulations, Mutilate seems to be slightly better total DPS output in a raid environment than either Combat build. But it should be noted that Mutilate is harder to deal with and takes more attention. Also, the OP was talking about leveling builds which optimization of DPS isn't as much of a concern.

I posted my preferred leveling Mutilate build in another thread, may as well post it here too, just in case.

If you're going to stay combat, there are several good main hand fists from quests (you'll want to pair it with a fast, fast, fast off-hand dagger) and a couple of decent swords too. Off-hand swords might be the sticky bit, but I remember coming across at least one (in Grizzly iirc).

Good luck!
