Elementalist Mage cast rotation (0/58/13) (and your FFB Qs)Follow

So, I was in Coldarra and wanted to check out the LB issue I was telling you about. I spammed LB and drained my mana, doing absolutely no damage to the target. So...now what? other than it seems to be a mediocre talent at best.

What type of mob are you applying it to? Try it on a dummy in org or whatever. I am unable to re-apply to a single target before explosion and I receive an error when I try to do so.

I apply LB:

Beginning of my dps cycle
Any time that I am moving (after it has blown up of course -- Great for Heigan)
If it went off and I get a hot streak proc re-apply before firing my Pyroblast
After it has exploded on bosses

A good mage should have around 70%+ up time of living bomb, it is basically free damage while you are casting. That and in the next patch when it crits it will proc hot streak... even more reason to cast it.

Ok, I'm a level 80 Fire Mage and was wondering if there were some tips anyone could give me to increase my DPS. Usually I do between 1500 and 2000. However I feel like I should be doing better. This is my first toon and I leveled her doing the refer-a-friend thing which made it near impossible to really learn my spells.

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Anvilmar&n=Valyna Here's my gear.

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-talents.xml?r=Anvilmar&n=Valyna Here's my talents.

I use this for my rotation:

Scorch twice ( I have the scorch glyph )
Living Bomb
Fireblast
Frostfire Bolt
Fire Bolt
Then I pretty much spam Fire bolt until the Scorch debuff needs renewed or I need to redo Living Bomb. Of course whenever there's a Hot Streak I use that as well.

On bosses I will use my trinket, Mirror Image and Icy Veins before starting this rotation. I'm sure I will be getting gear upgrades as we've been in Naxx a few times, but as far as rotation and really knowing my spells....I could use a little advice :)

Read the first post that I have listed. That will answer you why your dps is so low.

Beyond the first post here is what I immediately noticed:

1) There is 0 reason to be using fireballs.
2) No reason to use fireblast unless you are moving
3) You skipped 2 points in burnout
4) You added points in imp fireball and imp frostbolt - no reason, as you should be using frostfire bolt
5) Don't use straight yellow gems, they are a dps downgrade, even though you need to work on your crit
6) Your second trinket is terrible, absolutely terrible.
7) Skipped a point in elemental precision
8) Didn't take piercing ice
9) Took molten shields
10) Maxed out imp blizzard?
11) Skipped points in ice floes

Oh ok, I read somewhere that the improved firebolt was essential as a fire mage, and I'm super new to the frost part. What gems should I be looking into more? I just assumed I needed the crit. and how do I work on my crit without the gems? and I maxed out improved blizzard because when I'm in dungeons I use blizzard alot on the trash so I figured I needed that. LOL, and yes I know, my second trinket is terrible, I just haven't found an upgrade. So ok, I know now to change some of my talent tree. Take out Molten shields and Improved Fireball, and add them to my frost tree, but taking out the improved frostbolt, right? I'm going to go back to your original post, but honestly, i may need things put a little more into simpler terms. I had trouble understanding all of what that said. Just please keep in mind that even though I'm 80...raiding is very knew to me. Even after I hit 70 before wotlk came out, my guild was farming Kara, so I never had a chance to learn.

My original post has a spec listed in it including glyphs that you could pretty much just put right into yours and make it your own.

Check out the application Rawr (listed in my sig and various other places on these boards) and load your character from your armory. That will let you know what possibly upgrades are available to you, your best possible rotations, how much dps you should be doing for your gear level, what gems to be looking for, and what stats make up your dps better or worse (most likely hit > dmg > crit > haste). Although hit can just be taken from gear and shouldn't necessarily need to be gemmed for. I would gem for straight damage, damage/stam when you need your blues for your meta, and dmg/crit if you really want a yellow bonus.

So yeah...I respecced back into LB/FFB and used it on the heroic training dummy in SMV. I think I needed to see what it actually did to understand how it worked. Unbuffed, I was at 2100 dps, which was better than the dps I saw while testing it in the Nexus. It's obvious that Blizzard put those in for a reason. It basically taught me how to use it. I have one question: When fighting a boss, during the course of the fight if you can't tell when the target is about to explode, is there a mod or something to help detect the detonation or do you all basically pay attention to the animation?

I use Xperl. It makes my debuffs on a mob huge. Works well for me, though others might have more success with a DoT timer.

Ah, yeah, I have them small, I will just make them bigger. Thanks Pol.

classtimer + scorchio2 work wonders. the standard debuffs don't always sync up properly but I have very little problem with scorchio2.

Ok, so I respecced a little and made myself a new rotation, also getting some gear upgrades and I must say I did so much better. I was at the top of the charts in Naxx last night! Did anywhere between 1700-2300 DPS depending on what boss and what my job was, for example, my dps went way down since I was in charge of getting everyone unwrapped on that spider boss. Too much running around, not enough dps-ing. I added some of the add ons listed above, but I was wondering if there was an add on that would help tell me if there was a buff I could steal using spellsteal. Just haven't had much luck with it. I'm also having trouble getting Rawr to work, I've downloaded it, but I can't get it to run.

Are you on a Windows PC and do you have the latest .NET frameworks installed? If not you can get them through windows update. That normally fixes it.

Yeah, I told my guild leader it'd be better if the hunters took care of the Web Wraps and I've been on Maexxena since.

does the slowing affect of FFB count as being "snared" for torment the weak??? have ppl tried a spec that uses this and if so,,,did it work well for you?

By taking TtW you lose out on being a frostfire spec, causing you to lose a lot of the benefits that make FFB a superior spell to fire (the frost talents). It isn't worth spending the points, and as of right now it does not count as a snare for it, and it still will not in 3.08/3.1 but even when thunderclap and other spells will let it work, by losing out on the crit multiplier+dmg talents from frost it will not be superior to just using fireball.

Ok, I may need some help figuring out the Rawr site. I pulled up my character from armory and all that, but when it comes to setting fight parameters, I don't have a clue what I'm supposed to put in there. I need that to work in order for it to tell me my best possible rotation. It also says my dps should be about 2700 and on a dummy in Org I can achieve that, in a real battle, not so much. I'm still between 1800 and 2000. I've also had a problem with another Mage's Winter's Chill canceling out my scorch. Any advice on what to do there? Not sure about my rotation again.

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Anvilmar&n=Valyna Again..here's my gear.

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-talents.xml?r=Anvilmar&n=Valyna And talents.

My rotation is

Scorch x2
Living Bomb
FrostFire Bolt until I get a Pyro or I need to redo Scorch or LB.

Just think I should be doing more in my rotation, however you have told me before not to use fireball.

I use crit food buffs and crit elixirs as well.

I'm not completely WoW ignorant, but there's things I still don't know.
#70 Jan 17 2009 at 8:25 PM Rating: Good
If another mage is putting up winter's chill don't worry about your scorching. Which means you can focus just on living bomb, pyro, and of course ffb, you may get more ignite munching, but not too much else you can do. Can you post WWS (wowwebstats.com) for me (I assume you are saying that you are doing 1800-2000 in a raid and not a 5man?

Are you consatntly spamming the key before it gets to the end of the cast bar to make sure that you are casting as soon as possible? Not stopping to cast anything? Using fireblast/living bomb/instant pyros while moving?

Yes, I'm doing that in a raid. I'll have to use wowwebstats for future use, I don't know if I can use it now. The last time we were in Naxx was Friday night and I didn't think to use that site. And for future reference...how do I use that site, lol.

I do spam the key, and now I have an add on that helps me keep track of my scorch and LB.

the website is pretty easy to use. you get the uploader from their website (java based simple program).

First thing I would do is get either loggerhead or clsaver (I use clsaver) to keep track of when to record combat logs. At the end of the raid you open the application and point it to the combatlog.txt (in the logs folder of your wow directory). it parses it and uploads it to the server. I'm sure your guild would like to see it as well. It basically parses all of the combat log to know what every person did during the fights, works quite well. Just can't forget to remember to turn the combat log on the first time you are in the instance with loggerhead or clsaver after that it remembers and turns it on and off each time you come and leave from it.

I have been doing all raids and am really lacking on the DPS meter and I am not sure why.

I have been doing the rotation
scorch x2
living bomb
FFB til pyro proc.

Aside from switching to starting w/ living living bomb & scorch, what am I doing wrong? Is it gear related? I was thinking maybe I just didn't have enough crit.

I have the imp scorch, molten armor, and frostfire glyphs.

Any advice?

This is my armory...

Switch out the Egg of Mortal Essence as soon as you get a chance. Sure, the SP is nice, but you cannot underestimate the awesomeness of trinket procs. Beyond that, you should try switching to orange or red gems instead of yellows. Spellpower is a better stat overall than anything a yellow will give, but orange gems are still good if the socket bonus is decent.

Additionally, you want a helm with a meta socket as soon as you can get one. The Chaotic Skyflare Diamond is so ridiculously overpowered for Frostfire that it's not funny.

Beyond that, your gear looks good, you have most things enchanted and haven't made any majorly bad choices. If you don't mind me asking, about how much DPS you doing?

Just wanted to post here that I had to go back to FFB last night (our other mage was taking a shot after every wipe on Sarth3d.... he passed out with an hour to go...) so I had to go and respec. Let me tell you, good god that playstyle is different after not doing it for a month. Although I will probably stay FFB for this coming week for a change of pace and to prove to a mage in my guild that it isn't gear (I'm still geared for Arcane) that is keeping his DPS low... rather he is blowing cooldowns as soon as they are up instead of using them at most opportune times and he has a LB up-time of around 45-50% (should be closer to 75%).
#76 Feb 27 2009 at 3:15 PM Rating: Decent
When you say that you are geard for arcane do you mean that you have all mostly haste on your gear?? And geared for FFB is crit? Reason I ask I switched to FFb to try out and my dps sucked I think it's because I got rid of alot of crit gear when I went arcane. Also I am still about 500 dps behind our top mage I know its because he has soulblade and I have a crappy dagger but he also has like 100 more crit rating but less haste. Do you think I should get more crit and less haste?

http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Kil%27jaeden&n=Elmagox

Thanks^^

p.s. Should I use my current headpiece or switch it for T7 helm(heroes)??
