Warning: pointless rambling followed by what can only be described as the least-optimal healing spec available (short of 61pts into feral).

Tired of hitting mobs with a wet resto noodle, I decided to put my healing gear to better leveling use by monkeying around in the Balance tree. I also have what you Final Fantasy types might call a "static group" that expects me to heal when the UK/Nex/AN fancy strikes them. With that in mind, I embarked upon an offshoot of a hybrid DS/NS build in the hopes of satisfying both of my in-game pursuits.

I wanted to go deep enough into Balance to go Improved Moonkin, so at L.72/73 Swiftmend and Emp-Rejuve were clearly off the board, nevermind ToL. I'd been curious about Healing Touch ever since the advent of Inscription and that goofy Healing Touch glyph that reduces cast time and mana cost. It doesn't reduce mana cost enough to make it efficient really, so Moonglow, Dreamstate, Intensity, and Tranquil Spirit were musts.

Between talents and glyph, my HT now takes 1.07secs to cast and hits for about 2400 (1030ish spellpower); if memory serves, it costs just under 500mana. So now I'm putting Rejuve on the tank and spamming HT when necessary. I use Lifeblooms only for group heals. Pretty funny, really, and a nice break from LB rolling.

I think those numbers beat a Pally's FoL by a solid amount for heals/casttime (though I've never played a holy pally), but fall incredibly short in terms of heals/mana. I almost never used Innervate in 5- and 10-mans at 70, but I am using it occasionally now if the party takes above-average dmg.

On the Balance side, I must say I'm a bit disappointed with the change in dmg. My crits are much bigger now, but normal hits aren't much improved--I had to skip too many pure dmg talents to get as deep into Resto as I wanted. And, since 95% of my gear is healing gear, my crit % is abysmally low.

Anyway, that's my story. Can't say you weren't warned at the beginning. My build, if you're bored, and please forgive the toon name:

interesting take on healing.

hadnt thought of playing it like that. hell, if its working, i say run with it. cant speak to the viability of it long term, but with another few talent points to flesh out your build hey....ya never know.

The main reason I don't like the HT glyph is it destroys the NS-HT emergency button which has saved me so many times - both by it keeping me alive while tanking or while I was healing. Other than that, it sounds interesting.

Indeed, Friar, the glyph takes much away from the NS/HT winbutton, and it's something I must admit I didn't think of when I put all this together. Frankly, though I took NS in this build, I think I've managed to use it not even once. Doesn't make any sense to use it on an HT that takes about 1sec to cast and I'm just not accustomed to using it with Regrowth.

I've healed AN twice with this build to some success, though it's a much more stressful ordeal that I ever experienced in my ToL days. I'd managed to get used to Wild Growth in the short time since 3.0.2 and I now realize that it's made me a very lazy raid healer. Switch targets?! Bah!

I really can't imagine this working at 80 (heroics, 10mans, etc) considering the amount of splash dmg we're seeing, and I doubt I'll really give it much of a chance at that point. Much more likely that I'll go full balance here soon and then switch back to Resto at 80.

Cheers
