thanks to helpful folks i now can compare gear. but i'm not sure how to handle this one.

Mighty Alchemist's Stone
Equip: Increases the effect that healing and mana potions have on the wearer by 40%. This effect does not stack.
Equip: Increases attack power by 100.
Equip: Improves critical strike rating by 50.
I get a score of 175 for this (combat spec)

vs

Romulo's Poison Vial
Equip: Your melee and ranged attacks have a chance to inject poison into your target dealing 222 to 332 Nature damage.
Equip: Improves hit rating by 35.
score of 49 with current hit but how to take into account the damage?

i know...use a spreadsheet...but i'd like to see how this get's handled.

thanks

277 avg. damage with a supposed 5ppm proc rate (buffed from 2ppm in 3.0 or so the rumor has it) that's 1385 average damage a minute, or ~23.1 DPS. You can add that to whichever calculation system you like (I prefer APEP).

But, basically if you seriously need the Hit badly, go with the Vial. If you're close to the Poison hit cap, go with the stone. I'd move to the stone as soon as I could.

Edit: At 2ppm it comes to ~9.24 DPS.... Did we really lust after it like we did? :P

The best thing to do would be check a website(Wowhead/Thottbot/Allkhazam) and see if you can find a proc rate on it.

Based on the proc rate I would than determine whether it was worth using or not. Also If you actually had it, I would do some DPS checks on the Dummy to see how much it does.

Example: http://www.wowhead.com/?item=37064

Vestige of Haldor. It gives 65 haste rating and procs for 1024-1536 Fire Damage. I picked it up and ran a few instances with it. Overall it comes out to around 3% of my DPS in any given instance. It also is able to crit. So based on that I know its worth using.

In this case its pretty clear cut which is better.

The Mighty Alchemists Stone is clearly better because of how much better tha passive stats are. I would ignore the Potion part of it since A. it does nothign about DPS, and B potions are mostly useless now.

Comparing it to the Poison Vial the damage does *** to your DPS, but unless it has a very high proc rate(it doesn't) the passive stats on the MAS make it better overall.

In theory you could probably calculate the DPS bonus from the damage based on rpoc rate and average damage or something but I wouldn't bother. Just give it a little bit of thought and if you still can't decide, test both on the combat dummies and see which is better.

Also...use the spreadsheet.
