Expertise and Prot PaladinsFollow

#1 Nov 29 2008 at 4:06 PM Rating: Decent
Does anyone have any info on expertise and the role it plays for a tanking Paladin? I see various items with DEF and Expertise on them Just wondering how viable of a stat it is for Protadins.

Expertise is the third most important true stat for Paladin threat generation.

The first is a collection of anything that improves the power of your abilities. Strength, Stamina, Spell Power, Attack Power, Block Value. You can consider them all the same for this purpose. The second is Hit, which remains more important than Expertise because we rely on a few key abilities hitting all the time.

Expertise reduces the chance that a mob will Dodge or Parry your attacks. Since the tank can't simply stand behind the mob like the other melee DPS to remove those two outcomes, we need to stack some. You need 24 Expertise Skill (SKILL -- not rating) in order to effectivly remove Dodges and Parries. You likely won't reach this. We HAVE to stack Defense, Avoidence, and Effective Health stats -- we take whatever Hit and Expertise that we can while doing that. You can probably get hitcapped (so you never miss) or close to it (good enough for Righteous Defense and Avenger's Shield) but you likely won't get Expertise capped.

You can get pretty close. You get 6 from a mandatory talent, and 10 from the Glyph of Seal of Vengeance. Those last 8 points cost over 200 rating, though.

You probably don't need more than that. Tanking BC raids with 0 expertise was normal and worked just fine.
