Moronic GhoulFollow

Haven't touched my hunter in forever, so I don't know if this is a pet issue in general...

Quite often my damn ghoul has nothing better to do than to run off with one of the mobs I'm AoE'ing, and telling the sucker to "follow" and come back with the mob doesn't do a thing. If I'm lucky, Death Grip is available, and I can pull the mob back (in which case the ghoul comes back too) but it's quite common for them to run straight into another group of mobs.

What's up with that? Just me and my rotting friend?

When I was spec'ed unholy, my ghoul would do that on occasion as well. The only thing I could do to get it back was click it off defensive into passive mode, then click it back onto defensive after it returned.

Clicking follow while still on defensive will reset it to it's behavior when 'following' in whatever stance it already was, so if it's in defensive and you click follow, it'll go back to waiting for you to attack/be attacked, and when that happens, start attacking. You have to click passive now to get it to come back.

I think it has to do with it trying to get behind the target...but they both keep running away because the ghoul has aggro. It happens to me about every 20th mob.

Hunters get the same issue on occasion. Pet attacks a mob, mob runs off, pet follows for a bajillion miles, aggroing the entire region in the process...

Just switch your ghoul to Passive. He'll come right back to you and bring his new playmate.

I keep hoping this glitch will get fixed, but I've been seeing it for years now...

yes mate this happens with a pets a lot of the time.

They kinda 'Dance' with a mob: They run around each other for a few seconds and end up 20 yards away by the time they have decided to stop and fight.

Having the pet attack the mob that has main focus on you should disolve this annoyance, if not feel free to smash head against the closest blunt and/or sharp(if you prefer deep cuts to extensive brain trauma) objects, whilst shouting obscenities.

my main problem with this little cracker is how he always leaps, and he won't jump down, example, I'm DGing something on a ledge in cave moron leaps up to where the monster was, instead of jumping down, he runs through the whole cave, and I have a small army of really POed monsters to deal with when the rotting ****** finally reaches me. whats worse is that he has no move to dump agro, I can shadowmeld, I dump agro, moron gets it all and manages to somehow get my caught as well, we both die.... he gets me killed so often I just quit summoning him, I wish I could set his move priority so he didn't just do this .... LEAP! claw claw claw claw claw..... and why even have huddle? What purpose does this have? Why dosn't he have explode like I do when I go ghoul? that would actually be helpful.

Put him on passive if you're Unholy. If you're Blood, don't use a ghoul.

Problem solved.

if you have the pet bar, what ive noticed is the pet will defend itself if its in defensive, and when trying to call him back, if you lose aggro on the mobs and he doesnt, he will turn around and defend himself.

you can either let him die to drop aggro, or switch to passive / have him leap to you.
leap is nice as it works on friendly units and enemies (i wish shs worked like that)

also, i know for a little while in beta, using /commands you could force the pet to passive or defensive if you didnt have the pet bar, i dont know if you still can.

as for the ghoul pathfinding, ive noticed the ghoul doesnt jump very well. hunter pets tend to be a little better at jumping imo.
what i would try, before dismissing him, make him stay, then jump down and have him leap to you. it might give a pathfinding error, but it might work too. (only long drops seem to do this, when there are other options. if there are no or few options he jumps).

As for ghoul explosion, the ghouls had this by default for a while, then they took it out and now you have to spec corpse explosion to make your ghouls blow up. its very fail.

As for aggro dump, yea he pulls a lot of hate, but i find the ghoul to be a pretty decent OT. he's useful in many situations, especially when you're tanking and an add shows up behind the healers out of nowhere. (i dont know if that actually happens, but hey it might)
