Going back to frost for heroicsFollow

Right now I spend most of my time either doing heroics, or soloing. Still waiting on guildies to hit 80, though I did jump into a Naxx 10 run with some friends in other guilds and we downed a few bosses.

I went Frostfire build for a while (0/53/18) hearing its the "best DPS" spec, but I think when people talk about best DPS they're refering to raids and raids only. Where trash takes a little longer to kill (usually, not always). Where boss encounters are quite long (most important fact).

In heroics, most of the run is trash mobs, then you get a handful of 2 minute bosses. I think I'm going back to frost for good AoE, great survivability (not sucking up healer mana and attention) and high DPS on short fights (dual elemental + icy veins).

The other thing I noticed, in heroics theres plenty of splash damage on quite a few bosses. Frost gives me a ton of extra survivability. With a ~4k ice barrier every 30 seconds, that could equate to 16,000 - 30,000 extra HP on a heroic boss fight. Not to mention dual ice blocks.

Finally the last reason I like frost- boss fights are short in heroics. Frost does great DPS in short fights when you can cold snap and blow all your cooldowns twice. You almost have cooldowns going the entire fight.

So just wanted to share. I liked the FFB spec, I was impressed with my 7k crits in molten fury range, and who doesn't love back to back hot streak procs? I glyph'd for FFB and imp scorch (couldn't find molten armor), the damage was nice, but end of the day I wasn't doing that much more DPS in heroics.

I think where this spec truely shines is stand and cast 10-12 minute boss fights.

excellent advice and exactly what I would recommend. If you aren't raiding yet FFB isn't really for you. I would either go arcane or frost as they both have better short-time burst with cooldowns than fire is a more drawn-out overall dps (and molten fury range) style.

Thanks for the valuable information mikelolol, it's exactly what I was looking for. I'm leveling with a full frost spec (lvl 74) and have to say it's too much fun with the new imp blizzard! :D

Btw I'm a casual player who has no plans of raiding in a while, so I decided to stay frost for 5-men heroics, BGs or eventual pvp just for the fun.

One question: what glyph do you guys use when full frost? I got the water elemental's but I'm thinking in switch for the mage armor one for running instances/questing. With this new AoE style of dungeons I hate to have to sit and drink every and after 2 blizzards. On the other hand, I got 2/2 Cold as Ice and practically no downtime on my elemental, which is pretty nice in Battlegrounds and world pvp.

I've even bought a mage armor glyph and have it in my bag but im afraid of not making the right choice, since in my realm the WE glyph is WAY more expensive than the other.

Hmm I've been using a PVP setup for heroics, lol, they aren't exactly demanding and the DPS is still fairly competitive though I lose a couple talents I'd prefer in PVE.

Glyphs are probably the bigger change, since I PVP with my spec I've been using frost nova, evocate and blink. Not exactly huge DPS glyphs :P

Frost nova seems to break so fast on trash, or any form of target freezing for that matter, and generally bosses are immune so it's really not much in a PVE environment.

For DPS, I'd probably go with water elemental, molten (or mage) armor, then the last one is really up to you.

Theres always the frostbolt glyph, you gain 5% damage but lose the snare. I couldn't live without my snare, so it's not even a consideration for me. Plus I have torment of the weak, which deals 12% extra damage to snared targets. Now bosses aren't typically snare-able, but almost everything else in the game is.

So for the last glyph slot, if you can't find anything to improve your DPS, I personally like the evocate glyph. Heals you for 60% of your health if you get the full thing off. I find myself using this a fair bit in heroics. I tend to run with a static group, and by now the healer knows on a boss fight don't worry so much about me, I'll typically wait until 40% health and mana then top myself off.

The mage armor glyph has made all the difference in the world for me, and I'm with you, I'm still, STILL stickin w/ frost. I've noticed that I've made quite a few healer friends by keeping an eye on them and frost nova saving them as often as I can, and you can't beat healer friends. :)

I guess I'm waiting for fire or ffb to kick my ***. So far, neither has.

Just for the record, I've been using the mage armor glyph and found it amazing. Never ran oom after blizzarding packs of mobs every pull.

A bit off-topic but I've found my damage worse than I expected on 5-men, most of the times I finish on 3rd on charts, but when I was outdamaged by the prot pally on a UK run I did get a bit upset. Maybe he was overgeared for the place, honestly I can't recall his name or which gear he was using but I discovered that tanks are doing much more damage now.

Im at lvl 74 with 1120 spellpower, using this build. My rotation has been Blizzards whenever tank grabs 3 or more mobs, Frostbolt on single targets, IV + trinket Blizzards when cd's are up, always using the elemental on bosses and single targets.

Anyway, my goal is finishing the instance, I dont care about my position on dmg charts, especially on serious business 5-men, but I do want to know if this is normal in these WotLK days or if its just the player who fails hard. xD

You should be using IV+Trinket+Elemental on single-targets. Blizzard (and other AoEs) get very very little +dmg from +dmg due to how their coefficients work.

Thanks Anobix, I'll try that. What about Icy Veins, shouldnt I even bother using IV when Blizzarding, saving it for the combo IV + Trinket+Elemental on single targets?

I am not sure exactly how Haste would help out Blizzard. I assume that it speeds up the ticks [I am not positive if it works like a Dot or simply a faster channeled spell, I assume the latter). If you don't see any single-target things coming up go ahead and pop it, no reason not to really, but if you have the option save it for single target I would say.
