Even if you plan on playing a Protection spec, is it worth putting the first 7 levels into Ret to get Improved Judgement as fast as possable? Or is seven levels putting off your protection powers for to long?

Yea, I was talking about the first 7 levels. I plan on leveling as protection >.> as crazy as that normally sounds

Kings nor Divine Str will do you any good til around lvl 30. start off with Deflection and work down to Crusade before jumping into Prot talents.

Yea.. to be fair, nothing at the bottom of the Protection tree is really worth anything for a while :D

Only downside is when you get to key talents.. BoSanc, HS, Hammer to name but a few. In which case you'll be in a strange situation. 7 levels behind the other Prots, unable to do the "Protection Paladin Thing" but with only 7 points invested in Ret and unable to do the Ret thing. It's probably better starting ret and just respeccing when you reach a couple important Prot talents. It's not vital to get Improved Judgements early.. lots dont even take it (which I still maintain is a mistake).

I mainly like to be different I guess, but I decided to level and alt as Prot from the very beginning, and I decided to put all of my points in the Prot tree at the start. The main reason for this is I like to do instances in appropriate level groups, and I don't like to do the Deadmines until I hit level 20 or 21 and have my level 20 Paladin Quest (no sense in doing Deadmines more than once in my opinion, even if the second time is just a partial run for the wood).

At level 20-21 if you have improved RF already, tanking Deadmines is cake, doing part of SFK for the Paladin quest is easy, and a few levels (at most) later Stockades is cake too.

If you aren't an alliance player, this would probably still apply but I am not aware of all of the details of the level 20 Paladin quest for Horde.

Also, if you have higher-level characters run you through the dungeons you need, this is also not necessary. I personally hate having a high-level "run" me through something. I like to group with appropriately levelled people and help them to learn some group mechanics even early on.

It is of course perfectly possible (and not even difficult) to tank the early instances as Ret Spec and I have done so in the past. I think it is just the ********* in me that makes me want to spec this particular alt as Prot from the very beginning. I have Questhelper and Cartographer though, and I certainly don't seem to be having any problems killing everything at a reasonable pace.

Thanks for all the info. This is the build I've managed to throw together...any ideas on it?

I wanted BoK but...having to spend 5 points instead of 1 hurts T_T lol. Not sure how well this build will work but I like it.

i told you. you gotta adjust your spec for the appropriate lvl. if you try to tank VC/Stocks/WC/SFK with only Prot talents you will be totally worthless to a group that has Ret pally or Arms warrior. stay 2H'ed Ret til almost lvl 30. respec then, so you can go strictly Prot. at about lvl 60, start thinking about taking those other Ret talents. dont worry how your spec will look at lvl 80, worry how it will look in 5 lvls from now.

I already have my "current" build planned based on your ideas. I'm trying to get my 80 build planned now so that I see where I'm going afterwards. The only thing I really want to know is if I'm missing any must-haves, or have any useless talents for level 80. I still like to have my own build, I just try to avoid/get talents that are completely useless/essential.
