Improved Icy Talon Bug?Follow

#1 Nov 25 2008 at 2:02 AM Rating: Decent
I'm a level 80 DK currently specced 21/43/7, and I use a Glyph of Chains of Ice so my CoI does damage. I also have the talent points to make Chains of Ice cause Frost Fever. Casting Chains of Ice gives me the Icy Talon buff and I get my haste, but tonight I was running an instance and someone asked me "Why aren't you giving us Icy Talons?", and I said you are getting it, and he said no he's not, and I watched and indeed he wasn't while I was. I then casted Icy Touch just to see if it made a difference and the entire party was getting the effect of Improved Icy Talons. Based on the wording I imagine Chains of Ice should be giving the party Imp. Icy Talons if you have the talent points to cause Frost Fever with it as I do. So I ask, is this a bug? I don't even like to keep Icy Touch on my bar but as of now I have to for instances to make sure everyone is getting the buff.

It looks like a bug to me. Judging by the tooltips of all the spells and talents involved it should be working. Your CoI adds Frost Fever, Frost Fever triggers Icy Talons, and Imp. Icy Talons extends the buff to the group... makes sense, so it must be a bug.

My question is: why all the trouble to replace Icy Touch with Chains of Ice? IT has the same range, and should scale much better with talents, and with Chillblains it even gets a snare. Am i missing something?

reasons to CoI in a instance

-stop runners
-tricky pulls if your tanking and got some unique ideas
-stop a mob thats heading to your healer
-kiting a single mob if tank goes down
-etc etc

if your just dpsing, and not using CoI for CC, id say just use IT instead

but i noticed that bug too before i specced out of it

for DPS purposes though, use IT

i got a big ol frost faq that explains the rotation if your confused at all ^_^

This is the build I'm currently using.

My spec is made to tank and do well in PvP, and it does both very well so far. The reason I don't want to use IT is because I have all the easily accessible buttons on my keyboard and mouse bound to things I really need. Mouse wheel up, middle and down, are Death Strike, Unbreakable Armor and Icebound Fortitude respectively. 1-7 are Chains of Ice, Plague Strike, Blood Strike, Obliterate, Rune Strike, Pestilence, Howling Blast. A lot of DK's like to have an RP dump, I just use my for Rune Strike which costs 25 with the Glyph to add 10% crit chain to Rune Strike, the Horn, and because I have Glyph of Death Strike having the extra RP allows it to deal more damage and heal me for more which has saved me in both instances and PvPing.

Basically I have enough buttons to push and there are no good spots for Icy Touch, and if the talents were working as they should I really wouldn't need it at all. For now I just put Icy Touch as #1 slot in instances only, I'd rather be spaming Chains of Ice in PvP and in PvE it doesn't matter all that much.

Ok, it's an issue of keybinding space mainly, i understand. I was thinking that you just threw away IT and replaced it with CoI flat out. I totally understand the utility value of CoI.

I'm playing as Blood so far, and i love having the Death Strike glyph. Like you said, it can be a real lifesaver.

Keybinding space is more of a macro issue, players unfamiliar with macros will find themselves out of space, my advice to you is to learn some basic macros so you can condense everything into pretty much the left side of the keyboard.

I use a similar setup to mongoose, only with an alt modifier rather than shift, and my movement keys are qwe, using mouse turns or zig zag pulls for backing up.

MY question is why are you using a PvP spec in PvE? DKs already have a low enough dps as it is, it doesn't need help by speccing for pvp in pve
