Here's a suggestion, and fits nicely with Blizz's class specific mechanics:

Change the two talented totems, Wrath and Mana-Tide, from totems to spirit wolves, similar to Enhancement's Feral Spirit. Pets can't attack but can be killed, and follow you.

Now each tree has a spirit wolf and Elemental/Resto aren't blocked out a key totem element while a talented ability is in play.

Heck, lets go crazy and make all totems spirit animals. Or make us glyph to change certain totems into spirit animals, which would limit how many critters we would have out.

What a great thread, some really productive and realistic ideas.

It's to change around the functionality of Totemic Recall so that instead of dismissing the existing totems and getting a small amount of mana back; it should make the totems you currently have down automatically be reset at the casters feet for just one global cooldown and a certain amount of mana cost while the totem's active timer continues to count down.

This is a great idae and probably even more feasible than removing the GCD from totems. Could be interesting for luring hunter/lock pets away too if they are macro'd to hunt the totems down.

Making the talented totems not take up any of the current totem element slots would be nice. Though, I think Bliz would add in some conditions to such functionality. Since, currently we can not have both ToW and the Flametounge totem down, which Bliz may see as a bit OP (though in the end it such a thing may not be the case), if they gave us this functionality, if only from the stand point that Shamans have never had this mechanic open to them before. A condition I could see them making is if ToW is down, and then the Shaman puts down a Flametounge totem the ToW is destroyed, and visa versa.

OP? Yes and no. It would only really be an issue in 5 mans, now that totems effect the whole raid you will probably have both in a raid anyway (assuming 2 shamans). The thing to keep in mind is that you have spent 41 points to get ToW and 31 to get MT. No other class has to sacrifice a core ability to make use of one of their key talents. Added to this, the main reason I think most elemental shamans would like to see ToW not be a fire totem is due to the new buff to the fire damage totems though I don't dispute that we would also see people stacking FT ToW.

This idea made me happy :-)

The more I play and group with my Shaman, the more I think that the GCD needs to go. Right now I lose a ton of DPS by laying totems. Ran Halls of Stone last night, and in the five seconds or so it took me to lay totems and position myself, even the toughest mobs were usually half dead before I started swinging. You can lay totems too far away, or your party can move and you need to relay them. I really want to stop laying them altogether other than boss fights, but parties expect totems from Shaman, so what can I do?

Well, for starters I can get a little more bitter. While I'm standing ten yards away churing out little chunks of stone that glow pretty colors, that Death Knight is already cranking out DPS and Abomination's Might just goes up automatically. Gotta make sure I have Mana Spring down for the casters, but that Ret Pallie's Replenishment is really nice too and it came from his DPS. I've been in parties where I've had the highest overall DPS by 150-250 and still been second or third in damage done by 5% or so just because I lay totems.

Being the only class in the game that has to actively sacrifice DPS in order to generate their buffs on nearly every pull is really, really starting to grind my gears.

this works well too, as long as the turret type totems remain as they are. The buff totems are really in need of a overhaul

/agree more than i can begin to express

I've actually taken to not laying all totems down up-front unless its a boss fight or a really big pull. Best case scenarios, I start in dpsing from go, and then lay totems periodically during the fight if everything else dps related is on CD, almost as if it were a spell in my rotation, until they're all down. (SS, LL, ES, MW proc LB, SS, LL, ES, str of earth, SS...) annoying, but seems to work ok for my purposes. Also, getting used to timing a totem in between CD's has made me/my totems more mobile in a sense. Try it out sometime. I know it doesnt fix the inherent issues with totems, but its a fun and mostly effective workaround for now.

I really like some of the ideas in this thread also. Very nice. If I had my way, I would love to see totems not have a global CD so we could macro sets, PLUS have recall "summon" our totems to us, and reset their timers.... but I think that's asking a bit much..lol

On a related note, I LOVE the spirit wolves replace totems idea. =)
