I've been leveling my pally in OLs and decided to pick up a healing gear set. With all the DKs, its been easy to find everything but healers. So far, I've only healed through ramparts 3 times with only one person dieing once.

I'm just wondering, how hard are other OL instances to heal through? I'm lvl 65 now and looking at a few new ones, but other than Mana tombs, I haven't really hit many of them. Any to look out for?

with the new talents at the bottom of the tree you should be able to handle most runs. tank and spanks are np, aoe fights are tough. i've found that staying in melee range, you can use DS and JoL to proc your instant FoLs as well as get the bonus healing they normally provide, plus dps on the side is always nice.

The AOE mobs is mostly what I was referring to. I usually stay in range to judge, using the F button when targeting the tank to keep my mana pool up. In Mana Tombs, the only problems I could see were the second boss where he earthquakes and everyone in range takes damage, and the wyrms that damage everything around when they die. I don't think it would be a problem mostly, but those are things to look out for.

Mostly, I was looking for maybe some knowledge of instance I might want to veer away from because of AoE damage. For example, I would much rather do Ramparts than Blood Furnace because of the mine/dynamite happy engineers.

use Healbot and keep dropping FoLs on everyone. as a pally you will have to sacrifice a squishy once in a while. keep you, the tank, and a solid dps'er as your main focus. most of the time that a dps/cc dies is of their own doing, or lack of doing.

but anyway, a fight like Vorpil in SL is tough to heal because its a mobile fight and you dont get much recovery time from when he ports you. this is a great example of your party doing their part to make your job more managable.

Shadow Labs, eh? I've never done most of the Ol instances, even though I've had a 70 hunter for a long while.

Another question right to the side, but I'm mostly picking up elder/invoker gear right now for the MP5 and crit rating. Am I right in thinking this? What stats are most important for a healing pally?

/runs to sticky.

Your best bet would be to pick up pieces with spell power and crit (crits causes your Ret talented HoTs to proc).

If you plan on healing often as Ret then I would advise you to carry mana potions and food that can buff your healing.

Don't forget that LoH is now on a shorter cooldown so it could possibly be used a couple of times within a run.

AoE fights are always a problem for paladins ESP new healadins. I remember when I respeced holy on Deborah AoE fights were a NIGHTMARE. As a ret paladin its a bit worse. The important thing for you is to understand the healing challenges and when possible alert your group.

MOST AoEs can be avoided. Like the earthquake ability in Mana Tombs can be nearly completely avoided with ranged DPS. Although that'll probably be a problem with the influx of DKs.

The mana worms in MT are also not as bad as most people think. The first thought is "groups of non elites! LETS AOE THEM DOWN!". The problem is when you AoE them and they die simoltaneously there is HUGE AoE burst damage. Take them down one at a time or people are probably going to die.

Know your encounters. Read up on the instances. Simply knowing how to do the instance. Knowing what to expect and alerting your party members will not only increase survival rate, but increase the speed at which you complete the instance.

I just hit 68 and started in Outlands right when there was the whole Death Knight craze. I have healed Ramparts, Blood Furnace and Mana Tombs successfully. I just spammed Flash of Light constantly and almost never went OOM. I would recommend getting the Relic in Nagrand the up the spell power of you FoL by 79, but definitely not necessary. Long story short... Yes very easy to do any Outland instance specced as Ret.

Well, after everything the only instance I ended up healing in was Mana Tombs. Wasn't too hard really. After a few runs of doing it as DPS, I knew the place by heart and could lead groups who hadn't done the instance yet. I did 4 man seth. halls and the other one(I don't remember the name) with a 70 warrior tank, 70 DK tank, and a priest healer. While I wasn't main healer, I did have to become one when our healer died in a boss fight. Thank god for pots/judges/arcane torrent/lay on hands. We made it through, but never would have without such an overgeared tank.

I also think I'm going to be changing my pally over to holy. A RL friend of mine plays as well and has a 70 warrior that is collecting dust(It was his first to 70 and barely played since then). He re-specced to protection and wants to instance his way to 80 as he absolutely hates soloing with him. I told him I'd re-spec holy and do instances with him. Finding 3 DPS should be cake.

So, thanks for the help and encouragement everyone. Now I'm off to find a good spec, healing gear, and download healbot.
