My DK's gathering professionsFollow

#1 Nov 19 2008 at 5:29 PM Rating: Decent
Is their a quicker way to level up my professions besides hitting the starting areas. I'd like to not have to spend my questing time leveling mining and skinning.

Thanks

If you're willing to shell out the money you can get mining to 290 entirely through smelting (then just hit burning steppes or something for the last few thorium to 300.) I think you're screwed on skinning though.

Yep, for mining if you have the gold just buy the ores from the AH and smelt smelt smelt your way up to 290. I did this yesterday on my DK and based on the prices on your server you should be able to walk away with a minimal loss, or in my case, I actually made about 100 gold thanks to someone selling the gold and then thorium dirt cheap.
I also leveled skinning, and it actually was not that hard to get up to 300. DK's have good AoE potential so I did from 1-300 in about 90 minutes to 2 hours. Wailing Caverns instance helped a lot early, and later on Feralas and then Un'Goro have an awful lot of mobs you can abuse with AoE to skin.

Yeah. It's not all that bad surprisingly. With a mix of smelting and running around Alterac (iron/mithril) and Burning Steppes (thorium) I managed to get mining to 300 in only a few hours.

Yeah, I agree, it actually took me the same time to get my mining from 290-->300 as it did from 1-->290. Finding those last 10-15 thoriums were a pain, but I think I got mine around Winterspring. But really, buy the ores from the AH, smelt them and sell back the bars you make and you shouldn't lose much money, if any at all. I know people who actually make gold on my server just buying mithril ore and selling back the bars(about 3 gold price difference a stack).

Sadly outside of smelting, there's no real quick way to level gathering. It took me roughly 12-14 hours of real life time to raise herbalism and mining from 1-> 300.

I have been leveling herb/skins on my new DK.
Skinning, is easy to level. find the correct level range animals, aoe. loot. skin, skill up and move to next pack of animals.

herbalism has been the most painful thing to try to power level, 175 points and slowly climbing. the worst part of it is i am spending all my time riding and picking flowers....all the time i could be leveling up.
only good point is exploration is an easy added benifit to all that riding around.

I've found that Wailing Caverns is a good place to level skinning.

Also Sunkin Temple (The Temple of Atal'Hakkar) is an awesome instance to level up skinning if you can skin level 50-55 mobs.

There is so many Dragonkin in that place its not funny!

As an aside, if you DON'T happen to be rolling in the gold with your main or DK to buy up the ores for smelting, you can try to put on this mindset for the long farming grind:

Go ahead and do all those lowbie quests in the area as you mine/herb/skin.

You won't get much/any XP, but you WILL get rep. Use that towards attaining exalted in all the factions. Use the time to solo all those lowbie dungeons for the achievements. Use this time to help out your lower-level guildmates; heck, help out some begging soul who is DESPERATE *grovel grovel* for a run through some lower instance. Show off some! If you're on an RP server, use this time to work on your backstory--your DK came from somewhere. Maybe they can run into a lost love or forgotten enemy from their past. Maybe they can start remembering who they once were... Lots of RP potential. Make some MONEY--mine/skin in areas with rare drop goodies like pet whelplings or highly coveted twink blues. I picked up TWO Crimson Whelplings in Wetlands this weekend just skilling up my mining and skinning in the area.

Yes it's a pain to level up a skill from nothing--especially if you're high level and wanting to move on to the good stuff, but make the experience a little more than just a farm-fest. Saves the sanity.

It was a pain leveling the gatherings (mining / skinning) from 1, I threw cooking in there as well, but I decided to combine it with the Exploration Achievement. By the time I completed covering all of the ‘old world’, I had both gatherings and cooking to 300. Just keep an eye out in the areas of ore sites, and kill / skin a few animals in each region. Added bonus, as a full Hordie, no Alli toons, I had a chance to visit places I had only ever heard of, or rode / ran by.

I leveled both mining and herbing, without relying on smelting much. It took me about 2 days of doing nothing else. It got old, but I ended up with over 3000g by the time I was able to farm northrend stuff.

The only reason to take mining/skinning is to MAKE gold, not shell it out. It's counterproductive to spend gold on a gathering skill. It took me a few days to level mining by actual mining, but I came out of it 1K gold to the good instead of in the hole. Sorry, but I'm not stupid.
