Thinking about going boomkin for WotLKFollow

#1 Nov 19 2008 at 2:37 PM Rating: Decent
At least to level, that is. I've already decided that Oreb is going to be an endgame healer with Hierax as my tank. In TBC, Hierax was fury and Oreb was a feral tank. In WotLK, I find feral tanking to be boring compared to prot warrior tanking (where before I found feral to be more fun than the frustrating protection spec) and I've always found kitty form to be pretty dull stuff compared to my rogue (I mostly solo in bear form, tanking down large groups of mobs).

Anyway, so far in WotLK I've been leveling my druid solely with a hunter friend of mine. I've been having a decent amount of fun as feral but I want a switch. I leveled from 1 - 70 as feral, at least 95% of the PVE I've done was as feral, and I want a change.

Anyway, I'll be healing instances and I figure I can do this easily with a good boomkin spec, maybe half Balance / half Resto? Would that be viable?

Also, the only caster gear I have on my druid is largely the Kodohide pvp set (some S2, some S3, some S4) and a couple PVE healing pieces from Zul'Aman. Would this gear be good for Balance with the changes from +healing / +damage to +sp? I would most definitely prefer leveling in full PVP gear as I play on a PVP realm and there's been a lot of world pvps since WotLK came out.

And lastly, what would be a good spec that would get me good healing in instances and nice dps / smooth leveling for when I quest with my hunter pal?

It would definetly be viable. I'm full Balance though so I can't really offer a good spec (one to include dreamstate and I think with the extra talents Moonkin form's advisable too from what I understand) even though I'm full balance I can still heal relatively good.

Pretty much any heal gear is good dps gear, the only real differnce being that "healer" gear would have more spirit than "dps" gear which would probably have spell hit or crit to compensate, but spirit's still a great stat for dps.

If you mean healing with just the two of you, you could go full balance and not have your hunter friend die at all (partly for the heals, partly because you'll be slaughtering mobs as fast as he is.)

Keep in mind that at some point, Blizz will be implementing the Dual Spec thing, which will allow you to choose two specs and bounce back and forth between them (apparently at will), without having to visit your trainer. With that said, I think you're making the right choices with your specs. I too have a warrior and a druid. My druid will be Balance and Resto, and my Warrior will be Prot and most likely Arms.

By choosing Balance/Resto, you'll be able to reuse some of the same gear for both specs. Obviously the piece will be better for one spec over the other, but it should at least be passable for the other spec.

Regarding your request for a hybrid damage/healing spec for your druid (one that's capable of soloing quests while still being able to main heal an instance), you're probably going to want some variation of a Restokin build. At 71, I'd probably go with something like this.

I am planning on this for 80, and I have never had a problem healing with full Balance gear. Timing is everything as a balance healer so always heal early!

I love being a moonkin!

Due, on your build. If you lost 2/2 Gale Winds, Starfall, and Force of Nature it would allow you to pick up 3/3 Imp Rejuv and Nature's Swiftness.

I think that would be much more beneficial to having the ability to heal and dps.

was'nt the dual spec Idea pushed aside?

About the gear, on long fights at 70 raids, (post patch that is) i got more overall dps while having 50% resto 50% crit-dps gear cause u just dont go oom, plus the spirit on healgear made my spellpower rise.

So gearwise its even advisible to go for semi-dps/semi-heal

Nope, it's definitely coming. Blizzard's Jeff Kaplan told us in an interview at the WotLK release party in California. It may be implemented early next year.

Quote:
Allakhazam : Now at the World Wide Invitational we were told that we might get the option for a dual spec. We heard it again at BlizzCon where we were told that 'it's coming, no eta'. Can you give us an update on that?

Jeff : It's definitely coming. One of the things the fans will want to know the most is really detailed but we'll be including glyphs within the system so if you swap between your specs it will also swap between your glyphs because glyphs were really key to a lot of players, they wanted to be able to swap between those. We're figuring out the Hunter pet issue because we want to do something for Hunters that are switching specs as well. Those are some of the challenges. The User Interface is coming along great. The mechanics of it are coming along great. I can almost guarantee, as much as I can at an early time like this, that it will be in patch 3.1 that will be the first major content patch after Wrath of the Lich King is live. Now you'll see a bunch of patches come out before 3.1 but that will be the really sizable, "meaty content" patch and that's the one we're shooting to have it in. I would hope that will be out by early next year.

I can't wait. DPS for one spec and healing for another!

I really hope they put out dual specs soon, being able to be boomkin and then resto in a raid is going to be so amazing.
