Defensive Skill/Rating questionFollow

Several of my guildies do not have Wrath yet, and I also have not seen all of the TBC raid content. In the interest of fun, and to help my guildies gear up for when they do get Wrath around Christmas, I want to run the old TBC raids with them on occasion.

My problem is that with the current scaling of defense rating, the equipment which I currently have only gives me a 487 defensive skill at level 73. Since I will be fighting level 73 elite mobs in the old raids, I am assuming that 487 defensive skill is sufficient to not be critically hit since I am level 73, but I am not sure if this is correct or not. I know at level 70 the "magic number" was 490 defense.

Am I going to be eating crits in the old raids at 487 defense with me being level 73 or is 487 sufficient?

At level 70 the "magic number" is 490 against level 73 mobs.

At level 4000 the "magic number" is 490 against level 73 mobs (not raid bosses though). (Of course you'd have 2000 from level skills alone @ 4000 :D)

The number depends on the mob level, not yours (against NON bosses.. when it's a boss, your level is a factor). Actually, at level 73 a raid BOSS will be considered level 76 for you (Skulls dont have a level, no matter what level you are, they hit like they're 3 higher) so if you want to be uncritable against a boss you'll need 505 defense.

Incidentally, a Northrend raid boss (considered 83 @ 80) will need 540 Defense to remain uncritable. I seriously doubt this will be a problem to make for anyone :D

The point is? You'll need to have enough defense to lower your chance of being crit by an ADDITIONAL 5.6% (beyond your level defense skill) no matter what level you are. (For a boss)

wow - I didn't know that Raid boss levels scale with your level. So if you were lvl 68, would that boss hit like a lvl 71?. :)

I phrased it very poorly...

They will hit just like they always do. They aren't going to do 100000 more damage or less damage if you go at them at higher or lower levels.

What DOES scale with level is that for the purposes of the boss' effective Defense and Weapon Skills, they are always 3 levels above you. Meaning they have enough weapon skill to have a base chance to crit you of 5.6% and they have enough Defense Skill that you have a base chance of missing them with yellow special attacks (physical only) of 5.6%.

Since each defense point is 0.04% miss you'd need 140 over the max for your level to reduce the chance by 5.6% A level 80 against a raid boss would then need 350 + 50 (New level skill) = 400 + 140 = 540.

What I don't mean to say by that is that Onyxia can pwn face of 80s because she's a "Skull". She'll still hit like a really strong psycho level 60 ***** -- but she'll have a 5.6% chance of critting a base defense skill toon and you'll need 5.6% hit to never miss a physical special attack whether you're level 60, 70, 80, or 4000.
