I've picked up mining/herbalism to possibly take advantage of all the current 70's ditching outlands gathering for Northrend leveling/gathering and the influx of Death Knights rushing to level and quest in the Outlands neglecting leveling their professions.

It did take a really long time and was a totally bore, but I've found it to be worth it. I see nodes everywhere I go with little to no competition. I giggle at all the other Death Knights I run past that have no ability to pick nodes, who are shouting that they need money. Just casual gathering I've been able to make roughly 300g in 3 days.

If you have another high level character to fund your professions though, Engineering has a lot of cool new trinkets and misc gear that you can make. The 2-3 person mount looks very intriguing. That and the new 20 slot tailoring bag that requires level 410 I've heard gathering that mats for that aren't that hard and as of last night there was only 1 seller offering them at the AH for 300g a pop.

Thank you I ended up thinking about Pairing Mining and Engineering. I can use the ammo and scopes I can make from that for my hunter, plus like you said the nodes are everywhere. Thanks for the advice on it

I am still trying to figure out what professions to go with as well. Mining and engineering seems like the best choice but really its whatever you want to put your time into. I'm sure even if you went tailoring/enchanting it would be worth it just so you could add AP to your rings. If anything I just enjoy playing the class ^_^

Professions in terms of money-making potential:

1. DISEnchanting. Easily the most lucrative profession.
2. Mining. Used by multiple professions (Blacksmithing, Engineering, Jewelcrafting). Ore tends to sell better than bars, but that might just be me.
3. Herbalism. Used in two professions (Alchemy, Inscription). This might end up becoming just as money-making as disenchanting.
4. Fishing/cooking. A few fish make gold, a few recipes can be sold. If you concentrate on farming, this combination can make you lots of gold.
5. Skinning. Skinning is a Quantity > Quality tradeskill. You have to sell a lot (a real LOT!) of skins, but they are also easy to get.
6. All the rest - you can make a little, but it's a pittance compared to the gathering skills. If you decide on a gathering skill + one of these crafting skills in the mistaken belief that it will save you gold, you are still a loser - and that includes the "Gnome Warlock" and the "Dra Hunter" - both of whose money-making potential has been wasted. If you want a crafting skill, wait until you've reached level cap before switching (and switch back for a new expansion to make gold for leveling).

I have taken the time to level not only mining/egineering but also cooking and fishing. My 70 hunter is in Northrend and the fish caught there are used to make some terrific buff foods - a definate must have. I have only seen one other DK who was out fishing or gathering. They are all trying to get to outlands in a hurry, like TMaG said. It is a breeze and yes it is boring, but definately worth it.

Therefore, slow down on your DK leveling and get your professions up as well. Only a couple of extra days if you work hard at it and well worth the effort. You are going to have to do it sometime, might as well do it from the beginning!

All of my characters would have the mining/herbalist combo if you could track both at the same time.

Get gatherer and have it filled with data of the area you're farming. Turn on track herb and fly around looking at the places on your map where it says mines can spawn. That's how I intend on doing it.

Just careful when you get to Northrend, the loss of etiquette is something I wasn't used to. I would be mining a cobalt node only to have a horde player run up and take one of my hits. Then when I realized that cobalt ores were selling for 90-110g a stack, did I realize why it was so.

The funniest that happened to me last night was that I noticed a node, I was running to it when apparently a rogue saw it too, he hit sprint to try and beat me to it, only to encounter a mob to aggro him. I casually walked up to it, got 3 ores from the node, then walked away. It's made even funnier because my main prior was a Rogue.

I leveled skinning (now 360) and enchanting rather quickly. The former was spending an hour in 3 different zones killing/skinning for 100 skill points, the latter was using up about 1k gold buying mats off AH (not ideal, but quickest). Now at lvl 61 i've got 2 proffesions ready to level with as I go and both should turn profits for me.

First off, why is this in a thread about professions choice?

Second: where are you, what level, what quests have you completed so far? Without that we can't help you.
Let me go on a limb and make an assumption, though. You're level 55 and haven't done anything so far but searching stuff in the Ebon Hold. If this is the case, you have to follow the storyline to its end (about 3 hours) before you can go to visit profession trainers or mailboxes. Start with the first quest given by Arthas then follow the storyline. Class trainers are in the Ebon Hold's lower level, BTW.

I mine and skin. My warrior does both of these, and it's not only a great money maker, but the Toughness (+hp) and Master of Anatomy (+crit) buffs that come along with it are beneficial to me. Herbalism is another good one for Heal over time, and the Alchys and Scribes are gonna need the herbs, good money there too.

One of my DK has leveled mining/skinning to around 150 so far. My other has mining at 224. With him I had learned blacksmithing(still at 0), but I am beginning to think that there probably isn't really anything in that for me except a pain in the rear in the actual attempting to level it. I am pretty sure that I will be picking up skinning with him as well. The bonuses you get with each really make it worth doing.

I have been debating about Alchemy or Blacksmithing and their relevant gathering professions. I know that Mining/Herbalism and Skinning are the best money makers. Alchemy would be nice to have all the potions I could make for cheap when I gather the herbs my self, however I was also thinking Blacksmithing because there may be some good BoP items I could make, but I have no idea how hard they would be to make (exotic mats, rare plans).

Now thinking of it, I think Alchemy might be better because all of my alts would benefit from the potions and iirc the mats would be easier to get.

delleyna: you need to go through the portal in Ebon hold to your factions main city, complete the introduction quest then you can use the trainers in that city.

I'm a miner/skinner. Have been while leveling all my toons. Good money to support yourself as you level. When I'm 80 with my hunter or DK I'll probably drop skinning and take either....JC...or Eng. Rocket Launchers are fun :D

^^FTW.

I only have fishing left to level to 375 and I plan on that asap.

I went to Warsong Hold at level 65 to upgrade my herbalism, and I'm still getting skill ups while questing in Outland.
