Tanking?Follow

#1 Nov 16 2008 at 12:07 PM Rating: Decent

I tanked my first instance last night. All in all it was pretty easy, DK tanking looks good so far. I currently preach that all 3 specs are able and qualified to tank any instance so far. Here is my question. Which spec will pull ahead of the pack for end game raiding?

Each spec seems to have great tanking abilities and don't know where to begin.

The spec I've heard mentioned most is 7/59/5. I don't know how exactly it's filled in, though.

I'm Frost and some Blood and I've had no trouble tanking most of the Outland instances and tonight I ran Nexus twice at level 70 fairly easily. During the run someone asked why I'm using a 2 handed weapon as opposed to dual wielding, he said that I'd get more parrying if I dual wield. I've never played a tanking class, which is why I'm playing DK as one. Whats the story with this? I'll carry around one handed weapons to tank instances more effectively if its true and worth it.

Let me add a disclaimer to the OP, while blood CAN tank, we don't recommend it.

I've not seen anyone talk about the ice spec for tanking. Is anyone even doing this, and if so, can you talk about how you've set up your tree, and also if you have gone dual wield?

That's my frost tank spec. Frost is the most common, straight tanking spec out there, I even heard of one naxx they made the tank respec frost.

As to DW, you CAN but I reccomend against it. To overcome parry gibbing you have to stack more expertise than your 2h counterpart. That means they can have more mitigation or more stam.

"Yeah but if I'm using 2 tanking weapons I might have the same stam/mitigation as them."

Possibly stam, mitigation is less likely, but for the sake of argument I'll give on that and then move into my second point. Nearly everything that the death knight does has a description as follows: "X does Y% weapon damage plus..." with DW you will have less weapon damage, period. That means using the same abilities (and think of it like a rogue's energy, limited, so your moves are limited) you will simply deal less damage than your 2h counterpart, and therefore less threat. All for.. a few extra white hits? Death knight isn't about white hits, we're about moves that produce yellow damage.

Hello,

Above, Dilbert said that it is not recommended for a Blood to tank. Why is that? I am blood DK (with a few points in frost for +armor) and really enjoy it, and I was hoping to tank. My main is a hunter so learning to tank at this level is a bit tricky, but I would like to try it. I have not decided which is more important, if I want to tank or keep blood, but I'd like to know reasons why blood would be ineffective. If I can be blood and tank, I'd be estatic.

I know you will want to be in frost pressence, but it seems like there are still some decent skills to make it good for gaining health back. Currently (yes in blood pressense) I have been taking on 3+ mobs simultaneously that are all oranges and walking out with pretty much full life. I'd think with a healer and being out of blood pressence, bloods could still stay alive and gain hate.

On a related topic, and this answer could very well help me understand my last paragraph, does self healing from DKs count towards hate?

Thank you for your responses in advance. (:

ive boiled it down to what i think will happen

blood: mark of blood, self heal, seems like it tanks a single target, that deals phys damage, very well

frost: unbreakable armor, howling blast, good passives.... i think this build works best for being viable to do it all, single or aoe, phys or magic

unholy: bone shield, tons of aoe stuff, aoe (aka 5 man) tanking seems to work well here, as well as vs magic damage (even though EJ is mentioning good unholy tank builds cant afford AMZ, so im thinkin just good for the aoe threat)

just my opinion though
