Plain and Simple Answers for a plain and simple RogueFollow

#1 Nov 16 2008 at 6:33 AM Rating: Decent
Hi there, long time reader of these forums and one that today has just got too confused for words.

I'd like some help from those people who know the game inside and out, but i'd like the help to be worded in a way that I can understand (i'm not stupid, i just struggle with with some of the terms/abbreviations used etc).

To give you a bit of a background, i've played online games like this for years. I played everquest for about 5 fives at a reasonably high end level (a monk) and i've started to play Warcraft (for about six months properly now). I've got a lvl 71 rogue, which i've levelled solo (i tend to like the questing and all the loot i can keep), but I obviously want to be the best rogue I can be (solo and in group). I don't have an idea of what gear I’ve got, it’s all pretty much quested stuff, but I believe you can check out my gear somewhere. My rogue's name is Sanguin and i'm on Wildhammer (EU). I’m combat specced to pretty much what is listed on the site, however I’m gone for unfair advantage as when I’ve got two or so mobs, I like to blow evade, blade flurry and watch them drop.

Ok, sorry for the drivel, down to the nitty gritty.

I need to know a few things and your answers (in simple plain terms please):

What is the max amount of agility I can get have as a rogue? If there is no max, what is the level when I reach the cap for my DPS? – I ask because on everquest, there was a max level or str, sta and agi (which were what you were aiming to achieve on a monk).

What are the main stats I should look for on my gear - (I know it's sta and agi in terms of the basics, but i'm thinking more like haste, crit chance, armour pen etc). There is a lot of information about stats in the earlier posts etc, but this is all a bit over my head I suppose. I guess I need to know in order of uberness what I should be looking to get on my equip (and what their max level is)

What poisons should I have equipped? - i use instant poison, but with Shiv, should I be using something else? Should I even be using Shiv?

My basic combat moves are Cheap shot > Slice and Dice (that’s two bars, mobs don’t tend to last more than 18 secs) > Sinister Strike > Sinister Strike etc then Eviscerate. Is this the best pattern for me to follow or am I missing something out here? Should I be applying deadly poison and then use the poison finishing move?

I'm sorry if this has all been discussed before, but as i've mentioned, it's just a bit too complicated for my simple brain.

shadowpanther.net is a decent resource if you're looking at gear and trying to determine what piece is better than another. Read up on AEP and MAEP if you're looking for some theory behind it.

If you're looking to max out your performance, you're going to want to grab one of the Rogue spreadsheets (from elitistjerks.com -- different stats weigh differently based on your current gear.) AFAIK, Vulajin's is the best that's public, but I'm not sure about that with the new expansion release.

There is no agility cap. For combat, you want to start stacking hit rating, agility, AP, crit, and haste while leveling. There is a hit cap, but you shouldn't reach it if you're using a spreadsheet (and if you have the gear to reach hit cap, you SHOULD be using a spreadsheet). You want a fast (1.5ish speed) high-DPS offhand to maximize poison procs and to proc Combat Potency. You want 5/5 Combat Potency. Look at some of the builds around the forum for ideas on your talent tree.

I'll check out that shadowpanther website. That's not one i've looked at.

I've taken a look at that elitist website and that's what got my brain in a spin. I'm not looking for spreadsheets I suppose, just some basic background on what I should look for.

Thanks for the tips on what to look for in terms of stats. It's pretty much what I was expecting. One more thing on this and I was hoping I was correct in my thinking:

Basics

Agility > Sta

Combat

Hit > Haste > Crit Chance > Armour >

If i'm not, how do the stats go in terms of importance.

Combat stats are always: Expertise > Hit > AP/Agi > Haste > Crit > everything else. At least, that's the reductivist version. As noted you may consider digging through Elitist Jerks for a much more thorough understanding of mechanics.

The sticky on these forums is also a must-read, but for starters:

Instant on your main hand, Deadly on your off usually works great for combat.

Shiv is a waste of time/energy.

Stun-lock solo mobs as much as possible. CS/SS/SS/KS/... profit. Toss in an Evis here and there if it doesn't interfere with the stuns.

Do not stun mobs while grouped unless the tank asks you to.

There is no statistical Agi cap nor should you concern yourself with arbitrary numbers. Chasing caps isn't optimal because of the way the stats interplay. Being hit-capped with very low AP is a disaster just as much as having no hit but tons of AP. Again, if you want basic go with what I put above. If you really want to get into theorycraft, start at Elitist Jerks.

Be sure you have the highest average damage weapon in your main-hand, fastest available in your off (for combat).

It's down right now, but you can usually check out other peoples characters at wowarmory.com.

Meh... and read the sticky. Seriously. People put a lot of time into them so that we don't have to.

Good luck out there :)
