Rhino vs. GorillaFollow

#1 Nov 14 2008 at 11:50 AM Rating: Decent
To date I've run mostly with a cat and more recently with a dragonhawk, but now that I'm leveling again I think it is time for a tenacity pet. I've read a lot about how awesome gorillas are as a tanking pet and was wondering if anyone has any thoughts about rhinos, as I just tamed one.

IMO, rhinos stack up like this:

PROS
- excellent tank - I was able to take on 6+ mobs in the 68-70 range as a lvl 70 hunter with a lvl 68 rhino, something I wasn't able to do with my other pets but this may be normal for a tenacity pet
- has an AoE attack (Stampede)
- not everyone has one
- I just happen to love rhinos IRL

CONS
- I don't think Stampede affects aggro like Thunderstomp
- is an exotic, requiring 51 points in BM talents
- is HUGE compared to the size of my toon - I actually dismissed my pet when I was in an inn or a bank because it took up too much screen space

Does anyone else have any thoughts or experiences?

I'd still go with a gorilla, there is a big threat increase using thunderstomp.

Hm... iono, I usually just get what I like and have fun with it.
I'd go Rhino just cause, big, tough, cool and like you said, not everyone has one (for now atleast)

I'm sticking with my gorilla. Sits easy by my side. Fits nicely into my backpack.

Honestly, if you're not doing cutting edge raiding pick whatever you think is awesome.

Does the Rhino hold aggro as well as the gorilla? I have not tried one yet and was curious

Maybe it's different on your server, but on mine, Rhinos are the new Corehounds.

Imho, Gorillas are the safer PvE grinding pet. Thunderclap doesn't knock your mobs back 10 yards, so it's easier to keep them all in one place to Volley them down. Gorillas also have the same amount of health and armor as a Rhino, so if you tanked it with the Rhino, the Gorilla will tank it just as well.

Rhinos might be nice for PvP, but if all the PvP servers are like mine, world PvP in Fjord and Tundra are at a very minimum. Everyone is still too concerned with questing and killing DKs.

Thanks! Tha is exactly what I was looking for. I have been reluctant to give up on 51 BM (even though everyone has been saying so) as I wanted to tame a Rhino and I do like my Slithid. I also like the additional 4 points in the pet talent trees.

However, since GftT has been sacrificed to do this, I have definately noticed my pets lack of ability to maintain enough focus to hold the mobs, espcially solo ones with my ferocity pets which never happened pre patch when I HAD GftT.

Thanks again!

I'm using a gorilla myself. I love that it can tank multiple mobs while i just volley them to death. While I have the 51 BM talent, I mainly got it for the extra pet skill points rather than exotic pets. Of course, now that my gorilla is 80 I need to find a dps pet to raid with.

So what Gorillas make a better leveling pet now. I'm using a cat in northrend. Gorilla's now for some reason use thunderstomp on a single mob now. Kinda skeptical on using it out there at this point. Usually use my gorilla for farming. Just wondering

The thing that makes the Gorilla better is all the "kill X" or "collect X from creatures" quests that are out there. You should never have your Gorilla on only one target, I normally send mine out for a couple of mobs and even pull others to me and FD them off to the pet. Turn off smack and watch the stomps fly. Collect quest items and loot... rinse and repeat. If you are only targeting one mob at a time then you are utilizing your pet wrongly.

You fix that by never having only 1 mob. Learn to wrangle. Get on your mount, run by some mobs to body pull, and when they all catch up to you, dismount and BOOM! If your Gorilla is on Defensive, it'll hit thunderstomp as soon as it spawns, and take all the mobs off of you.

Edited to take out the apostrophe that Souliken put in "Gorillas."

If you want to tank 5 mans then gorilla is better in that his special attack is great for threat on tanking multiple mobs and does not knock mobs back, which can agro another group and perhaps cause a wipe.

Tanking 5 mans with a Gorilla is risky. I actually think I'd rather take a bear or a turtle and manually switch between targets. Thunderstomp is pretty indiscriminate with what it hits, and will break any CC within 8 yards. Usually I would say that CC shouldn't matter if the tank can hold threat on everything, but hunter pets are a lot more squishy than a proper paladin, and will probably need enough CC to only take 1 mob at a time.

Has anyone tried tanking 5-mans with a Gorilla? After a few bad experiences with my pets tanking in TBC, I'm a little afraid to try it again... Then again, I was trying to tank heroics with a DPS spec instead of a beefed-up pet-tanking spec. It was pretty funny to see a feral druid in crappy boomkin gear healing a Gorilla. Not so amusing trying to 3-man heroic black morass with a resto shaman.

I've switched over to a gorilla for leveling and I love it - my rhino has been parked in the stable since lvl 70. Thunderstomp >> Stampede for the reason mentioned by others - Stampede knocks your target back making it more difficult to volley and potentially aggroing unintended mobs.

As for tanking a 5-man with my gorilla, I don't think I would be comfortable with that personally. I'm at best an average player, so it may just be my lack of skill/self-confidence that makes me feel that way. However, one thing I've noticed is that my gorilla will randomly go off on nearby mobs even when they are not attacking me or my pet. This is usually just an annoyance in solo PvE but could be disastrous in an instance. I don't know if it would still do this if set on passive - I usually run with pet on defensive - but that's not a chance I'm willing to take with a party depending on me.

I've been using my gorilla on 5-mans as additional wipe insurance. Thunderstomp pulls runners into the tank's range. It does mean I have to trap further away.

This seems to be most important when I'm in groups with Death Kniggits tanking. In spite of their insistence, they don't really tank all that well.

Well great. My question was answered in here. Before even checking first I made a new thread. Please someone anyone. Delete it. No need for 2 gorilla threads when one is sufficient. Sorry.
