I know this really doesn't belong in the Hunter forum but I am going to ask here as the people on this forum have always been helpfull.(And i am a hunter ofc)

Last night (really bad timing) my wife's laptop expired 30 minutes into her WOTLK life.
We have been told it is terminal and have resigned ourselves to purchasing a new one.
The Hard drive blew up on mine six months ago and I spent 9hrs re-installing the original Wow and then Burning crusade ( complete with patches etc etc).

We are dreading how long it is going to take to Re-install Vanilla, Burning Crusade, Wrath etc ( as well as patch 3.0.2 ). Both of us are virtually complete computer illiterates and have no idea if there is a quicker way.

We would both greatly appreciate it if someone could explain (in "laymans" terms)how to speed up this process, if indeed there is a quicker way?
There is probably a ridiculously easy answer to this and I can here the word "NOOBS" being whispered now, but if it gets us back onto levelling together in WOTLK a bit quicker, the stick I get will be worth it.
Thanks in anticipation
Cola

PS. I have tried Blizzards technical helpline but it is closed due to long queues :(

I am going to assume you still have a working WoW installation? If so, just copy that directly to her new PC and start it up. All your settings and configurations will be active though, so if she prefers things otherwise she'll have to redo her setup.

To do this, you'll of course need to do one of the following:

1. Set up a network between the two computers.
2. Use an external HD to copy it between computers.
3. Burn the whole folder on a DvD or two.

I've installed WoW once in my life, and I've moved that installation between six different computers. No more is needed.

Firstly, Thank you North :)
I am finding it hard to say anything more without sounding ungratefull......but
Network? External HD? My knowledge of a computer begins and ends with the on-off button.

I think I am starting to realise that to talk me through these operations would be a long and tortuous saga, which I couldnt expect anyone to try and endure.
I will print your info and see if there is a local boffin who will carry out these procedures for us.
Thanks again :)

I'm not 100% but there shouldn't be THAT much patching if you just install Vanilla, BC then WOTLK without starting WOW.

Panic off
I've just talked to Blizzard and WOTLK discs apparently have vanilla, BC and all patches upto 3.0.1 on them so no need to re-install the old zones.

Hmm, completely forgot about hardcopies. I think I have the original Classic cd's around somewhere, but they've never been out of the box. Downloaded the stuff during Beta and just used the CD-Key to activate the account when it was released. Bought TBC online and downloaded the content, and I'll be doing the same with LK. After Steam and Gog.com started providing me with downloadable games I could just download to any computer I'd use, I've started eliminating the need for physical copies for any of my games.

But what Kelnoen said just might work. I would guess the TBC and LK discs contains at least semi-recent builds, eliminating the need for most of the patching. I just don't know whether or not the discs contain the full data or just the raw builds pre-patches.

Edit: Longwinded post = danger of someone posting in the mean time, making the entire post pointless...

/nod

Blizzard put all previous content you need on the WoTLK dvd. After that the updates aren't too bad, at least for now.

If you do have a computer already updated though it might be faster to network them and just copy the entire WoW folder to the new computer. Just remember it will also use the same graphic settings, which can sometimes cause problems. To reset these then delete the WTF folder (you might want to delete the addons folder as well). The WTF folder is where the game and addons save all your UI information. When it's deleted and the game is run it resets everything back to default.
