Healing as a disc priestFollow

So a while back I asked about whether discipline spec was a viable option as a healer. And thanks to the latest talent tree specs, I strongly believe discipline is the way to go for healing. I tested the heals on both specs and the difference wasn't enough to convince me holy was a better spec for healing anymore. Although holy spec gave me bigger heals (greater heal about 4700hp average holy spec and 4200 average discipline spec) discipline gave me penance and spell haste. Penance I must say is the ultimate heal. Its instant, 3 1500hp heals over 1.5 seconds (4500 hp heal if at least one of the heals doesn't crit) not to mention divine aegis. I never run out of mana also.

I've healed kara, Hyjal, and nearly every heroic with no issues whatsoever. I've found discipline spec gives the healer enormous flexibility when it comes to on the fly heals, mana consumption, and survival. Of course having a good group helps also. I've been in groups where I just sat back and let prayer of mending do all the work, and I've been in groups where I've ran like hell with 3 mobs on me throwing out group heals to prevent a wipe.

However I don't tell groups that I'm discipline spec'd till after we complete the instance. What are some thoughts on holy versus discipline when it comes to healing?

Just pointing out, that doesn't really say anything anymore. You could do at least as good as holy there; since all raids are now so damn easy all you need is a semi-PvE spec to be succesful.

I was actually looking forward to it, until I decided I would stop PvPing on my priest. I've found I no longer like PvP on a priest anyway, and because of that there's fairly little reason for me to spec PvE disc healing. I akknowledge it can be done and is probably on par with (or close to) holy, but... I s'pose I just prefer holy for PvE, in the end. It's more solid, and turns you into a *healer* rather than a walking mana bomb who tosses out utility buffs.

Discipline is more efficient at single target healing than holy.

Tank eats big damage. PW:S followed by a big heal that will almost definitely crit. The mana return from Rapture between the shield absorbing damage and the return on the heal will be excellent. Plus the shield will do damage. And that big spell was cast at a hasted rate via Borrow Time, which also increases the shield amount which increases the amount of mana gained via Rapture.

That heal and many other also grant the target Grace which increases all other heals you cast and gives him some extra mitigation. Which stacks and lasts 8s so I wouldn't expect it to fall off.

Penance is also crazy good. And has many talents to buff it up and reduce its cool down.

The days of disc being just for PvP are over. I rolled a priest to level and try disc out when they dropped the new trees. While it has been slow going I can't wait to hit 80 and tank heal raids with my discipline priest.

I've been having a lot of success healing as a disc priest in 5-man's. I respeced from shadow when the new trees came out, and I'm loving it.

5-Man's Disc is totally viable, in raids I think it will still be, but you're probably going to need a holy priest to deal with the huge AoE situations.

Penance is amazing. I mean, at level 72 with about 1000 spell power Penance is hitting for 2000 ticks. Critting for 4000 or so. It scales amazingly well.

With Disc, Power Word: Shield becomes very useful due to buying time and Rapture. Anyone who tells you Disc is not a viable healing spec is either stupid or jaded.

And soloing as disc isn't half bad now that Devouring Plague is trainable and our 51 point talent damages. Spec Disc, you won't regret it.

As a long time Shadow priest, I specced Disc for the expansion and am loving it. The best part is that I didn't even need to change my gear since Disc is all about +spellpower and int.
