Beta Guys: spot for DK dps in raids?Follow

#1 Nov 10 2008 at 3:39 PM Rating: Decent
Do you guys that ran beta know how much of a demand their will be for DK's in the new 10 & 25 man raids? My guild is a pretty solid group but we have two rogues and 1 enh shammy (me) who are all thinking of re-rolling as DK's. The advantage to our guild is that we are lite on tanks so that would be nice but if we have our mt's I doubt their will be room for 3 dk's not to mention losing the rogues and shammy. What do you guys think? How many DK's were running the raids in LK?

Probably one in a 10 man, maybe 2 in a 25 man. Their dps is much weaker than pure dps classes (hunter, rogue, mage, warlock, and even lower than dps warriors). Tanking is OK, but I know in my situation there will be an overabundance of tanks if anything.

You can't really tell from beta raiding because there were SO many people doing beta just to try out the DK, it wasn't uncommon to have 4+ in a 10 man and 5+ in a 25 man in beta. When it comes to serious, true progression raiding guilds, the numbers of DKs will be far, far less.

It's a challenging class, and as Blizzard put it "quick to learn, forever to master." I think DKs will have a higher standard as compared to the well established classes when it comes to earning a spot in raids. Raid leaders already know what to expect of current classes, if a DK wants to take the place of that class, they have to really show that they know what they're doing.

You do realize that you won't be loding your original characters when you create a Death Knight, don't you? It's not really a "re-roll" where your rogues and shaman disappear. You'll be able to use your DK's when needed, and your rogues/shammy when they are needed.

if by re-roll you mean they arent going to use their old chars again lol.

really i see DKs having a spot over cat druids now (sorry cats). dk might be able to replace rogue (blood dk would be more likely than the other two specs). frost dk could replace enh shammy but will never be as good as an enh shammy's buffs.

dk will probably be more prevalent in 10 mans now, especially for all the guilds who will casual raid and not have a set 10 man group (like my guild which typically has 3-4 regulars, 3-4 people rotate, and 2-3 pug members). i wouldnt expect more than 1 in a progression raid.

Never had a cat druid in a raid, of the 2+ years I've been raiding. It's always been a feral tank that put on cat gear for the bosses he didn't need to tank. Will my DK replace him? Doubtful, our feral druid is hella good.

Only if your guild has freaking TERRIBLE rogues. Rogue dps is WAY higher than DK dps.

I saw this commercial that said "If they keep saying pulls like a tundra, is safe as a tundra, and is as nice as a tundra, why not get a tundra?" I feel the same way about enhancement shamans versus DKs. Why get the class with some of features of the enh shaman, when you can get the enh shaman? Now DK will enable the raid to continue as opposed to the "no wf for melee cuz the guy didn't show, melee dps is screwed tonight" but will DKs REPLACE them? Nah.

Hmm, maybe. I could see two in a 25 man.

Yea, sorry, by "reroll" I meant level a DK before our current mains, not deleting anything. We're just realizing that it's going to be tough to get a raid spot as a DK and trying to figure out whats best for our guild. Not sure I want to give up my raid spot to try something new just yet...

OK. The only reason I said what I did is that there have been a lot of "do I have to remove my 55 to get a DK" questions lately, and I wanted to make certain...

In any case, you guys are going to have to do quite a bit of leveling, starting from 55 to become raid-ready. I'd try to do that leveling with the help of guildies, in order to assess raid viability as you progress (it will also make leveling faster). Run through the old-world stuff as a trio with a healer, do the outlands instances and heroics to gain levels instead of the normal quests, in order to best determine what you're going to be doing in raids. It probably won't be all three of you at a time on a progression raid, though.

Levelling a DK vs. levelling a level 70 shouldn't be too bad to level. You go from 55-70 real quick anyway, and then 70-80 is going to be about the same for both.

As to a DK being brought to raids...90% of the time, if you have the gear and skill, you will go to those raids. Very few guilds will try to maximize their raids by taking specific specs, most guilds are just happy to even get 10 or 25 people who are online at the same time and where at least a couple people know the fights. Some raids even will bring horrible players (we're talking like a level 70 mage that pulls 280 DPS...or worse - the level 70 fury warrior pulling 68.3 DPS, and yes I personally saw that) because they would rather do raids with 25 people instead of 15 people. If you can show up to raids, there's a good chance you'll probably be going.
