Is it really that simple? I have been wondering. I was not in beta and no DK abilities seem to carry an extra threat component.

I could tell 5/5/5 was required for DK tanks but is that really it? Can I just do whatever from there?

I want to see a blood, frost and unholy tank build. Maybe some hybrid ones also if that works.

Tanks.

You could make a case for just about anything beyond that. It is possible to tank as blood, for instance. Is it the best possible? I'd make the case that it wasn't, I personally prefer going frost for tanking, but if someone comes along showing me an unholy spec, as long as they have the 5/5/5 of the first tier, I'd be willing to listen to their spec. There are mid-level tanking talents in all 3 trees (spell deflection in blood, frigid deathplate in frost, magic suppression in unholy) and with the exception of HC in frost, none of the upper level talents really affect tanking, other than threat generation.

Vampiric blood increases healing you receive from healers (from what I hear, I need to confirm this).
Unbreakable armor increases your parry and armor.
Bone armor reduces the damage you take.

All 3 trees have tanking components, and yes you can theoretically tank with all 3 trees. I'd make the case that frost made the best tank, unholy second, and blood a distant third, but you still can do it. The only thing you NEED as a tank spec is 5/5/5.

the differences between the 3 specs isnt that big. unholy gets some great aoe tools and some utility things, frost gets some burst and other types of utility things and a little more mitigation, blood gets high damage and a little less mitigation, but self healing.

really its preference for the most part. if you do end up a progression MT, which i dont see happening very much, you will need to min max some. but DK doesn't have the large amount of mitigation options through talents that a warrior or paladin does, and most of their mitigating abilities are baseline. because of this i plan to see DKs being the ultimate OT class. I expect raids to go with war or bear, pally, dk or bear, for their 3 tanks.

After taking a look at the different specs, it seems like unholy and frost are really made for the DK tank. It also looks like unholy will generate more threat, while frost will take less damage.

One question I have is do runes work like rage where you have to hit/be hit to get it? The issue i see with OT's at the moment is that warriors/bears are rage starved, and pallys go oom, since their generation is based on being hit for the most part. If the DK is different, it WILL be the ultimate OT class.

read faq,

runes each have their own individual cooldowns, and using runes generates RP for other abilities.
so, no DK dont need to get hit
