As a matter of raceFollow

#1 Nov 07 2008 at 11:14 PM Rating: Good
Whats everyone favorite race for mage. See I'm thinking of starting a horde toon on Aerie Peak so I can be part of my friends guild she's got there. I'm wanting to be a mage. Only class I've yet to get past 20. Most i've ever leveled a mage to is 15.

I want to know as a matter of race. What is best? I see alot of BE mages. Is that because they have a bigger Int pool. I see undead mages because they can eat humanoid mobs. I'm wanting the best race possible that will deliver on all aspects of the class. Most of my toons are melee. Accept for my 70 hunter. But meh lots of hunters in wow. I'm just one of the mix.

Mages port, make there own food and water. With first aid...what more do you need. I don't really care for the healing classes. Never have. As a mage I feel i'd be able to aoe kill with ease. I've watched videos about frost aoe grinding. Pure awsomeness.

If I were to level a horde toon. Is frost what its all about now in leveling do to the control you have over the mob. Or fire do to the pure power on single mobs. I'm here to listen and learn. Now that the new patch is out. I'm a noob in the mage world. Thanks for reading my post and for those whom reply. I'm a quick learner and an avid listener. I'm here to learn everyone. Thank you

Edit: I forgot to add and I appolagise for editing so soon. I'm going solo tell I feel its time for battlegrounds. I won't do raids because I havn't the time for it. Occasional instance runs if I feel i need an upgrade.

Come friend, and join me on a voyage of self discovery. The first thing you must do is empty your mind of thoughts such as this:

In other games, you pick a race based on the stats it will give to you. In WoW the differences are so minor that it's not worth worrying about(racials aside). In WoW, there are two things you choose your race based on(three if you RP).

First look at all the races you can choose. Create one, see its casting animations. Hear its voice. /dance like no one is watching. Firmly fix what you learn of each race that you might choose in your mind. From there, we go on to the next step.

Now you must decide what racials fit in with your goals in the game. Look them over. Consider their uses. Weigh them against eachother. Ignore those that serve you no purpose.

Finally, with both of these in mind, you must decide which race most fits the mage you're creating. Will he be Forsaken, with the ability to break free from crowd controls and a rocking headbanging dance and spiky mohawk? Will he be a Troll with the ability to berserk and an interesting "HADOKEN!" casting animation? Will she be a Blood Elf, able to silence her foes while resisting their magical attacks a small amount of the time and complaining about the state of her nails?

Only you can decide. It's probably the most important decision you can make for a character. You'll have to live with it for the life of that mage. It's up to you and you alone to decide. Choose wisely what best fits him or her.

You have to decide which is more fun for you. The best spec is the one that brings you back day after day salivating at the prospect of playing some more. Many will tell you to play as fire until you're high enough level to max out Shatter, Frostbite and Ice Shards, then respec frost for all those goodies. But you may play fire and find that it is what you were meant to be. Or you may like neither and find your home amongst the arcane. Respecs are cheap enough to try out everything and find out what kind of mage you were meant to be.

Thank you very much for that reply that will forever echo in my mind saying..."My god..you were right". All this time I've pondered the thought of what is the best race. Not even thinking...who really cares about race. Its what you want to stick with from level 1-70..or well 80 soon. I will be a mage.

Let me ask oh wise one of the frost bolt. How well do mages solo. I love soloing having my thoughts to myself and feet taking me to places I've yet to explore. From the time I cast my first fire ball....it will only get better from that point on. Hopefully by the time I obtain level 10 I will know which path I will want to take. Fire or Frost. Again I thank you.

One of the most important things is mounts. Do you want to be a blood elf riding a ostrich or a bad **** undead on a skeleton horse. Albeit one that looks like a goat due to horns when you get your epic but still something to consider. To give BE's that bird mount was a horrendously evil thing for blizz to do.

My BE is well on her way to being able to get an undead mount by the time she's level 40 or so. So while mounts are an important factor, they're not all that important considering that you can get the mount you'd prefer with a little rep grinding and proper planning.

Unless you're a Tauren. And since those can't be mages, you won't be. Smiley: tongue

I don't really pay attention to mounts that much. As long as they get me from point A to point B I'm ok with that. I tried a BE yesterday. I think if I played a be I'd be a female. The guys are just to fem. I think I'm going to roll a be though. Don't know if I could stand playing a dead guy for 80 levels. As for taurens. No hoofs please. Trolls....nah don't like the whole martial arts dance they do. Kaparete or what ever it is called.

I've always been an elf fan. Long ears...long gangly arms..but pure awsomeness. Played a elf in ffxi for over 2 1/2 years. I think I can stick with one for 70 levels. Just wish the males had more hair styles to choose from. =(

Edit: Had some grammatical errors to fix.

My mage is a BE and I think the Arcane Torrent racial is very useful both for PvE and PvP. As Poldaran said, race is not important in terms of ability or stats. It's barely noticeable. You want to look at the bonuses you get from racials and if you like the appearance of your toon. The undead's Will of the Forsaken ability is supposed to be really useful in PvP, I've never PvP's with one so I can't say myself. I don't like Trolls much, so I can't give you an opinion on their racial stats as I've never played one above level 10.

I'm a frost mage and I think it's definitely the way to go. Frost makes leveling much easier because it gives you more survivability than fire or arcane does, and more crowd control. But it's important to try things out for yourself and see what you enjoy doing. :-)

You may not like the bird mounts, but I do. They remind me of chocobos from the FF games, and they come in pretty colors. ^^

Like a pall of mine said: "I don't like riding *****, so I'm skipping the Belf mount".

Since I'm a RPer, my race depends a lot on what character I want to build. I'd never do a Troll mage because the race/class just don't mix if you ask me. An Undead mage seems a bit odd to me as well, but I could do with an arcane Blood Elf mage. Gnomes would need to be arcane as well, and I in fact have a Human elementalist.

I actually do this, plus I change my hair color and style just about every other day. I'm so superficial and that's why I love my blood elf. She's like an pixelated representation of myself in-game. I think that's what makes her the most enjoyable for me. I actually feel a bit sexy while throwing fireballs off at my enemies. That's just me.

I think if I had to do it all over again, I'd play human. I've played every mage race and blood elf and human are my favorite races.

Souliken, I think you'll enjoy mage no matter what race you eventually pick. Just follow Poldaran's advice and you'll be happy.

As for mounts...well..I have 54 mounts now and the Ambassador title. On my gnome I did every Stormwind quest I could and got myself a horse mount at 40. I was happy. I did the same with my blood elf and got a skeletal horse mount and then the pvp skeletal horse at 60. Mounts are a small thing in this game and with a little bit of work, you can have the mount of your choice.

*sniffles* Sorry had something in my eye. Think it was my finger. Anyways you guys are awsome letting me know your ways of the mage. Your likes and dislikes. Different strokes for different folks is a good term to use for this. If I'm gonna play a horde mage. I'm going BE. Like the whole anime style voice over. They could have done away with the twisty jumping. >< I've heard all day about leveling as fire or frost.

I've come to this conclusion. Fire is great for single targeted mobs while frost is great for AOE. Read that in a former post here in the mage district of Allakhazam. I like aoe killing. I do it on my hunter all the time. Watching the mobs fall one by one is like music to thy ears.....Ice shards in your eye like a gnome from the sky thats amorrrreeeey. Ok enough of that nonsense.

I remember Paldoran's former post when you got your phoenix egg hatchling. Followed the mage forum ever since. Besides porting..what else can mages do...?

As for utility stuff?

Creating your own water and food is GOLDEN. You never ever have to worry about any of the kind, where ever you may go. Also, there's blink <3. You'll probably spend 20% of your time as a mage blinking, whether it's in PvP combat, in an indoor environment where you want to speed up travel or a fancy mage move used for RP. Last, there's your excellent snare capabilities. You might find yourself 'tanking' a mob in an instance now and then my simply kiting him around.

Mages lack stealth, ressurection, tanking or healing capabilities, but utility wise they are only beaten by the rogue if you ask me.

ye i have a troll mage when i first made my account, and i actaully hate trolls but unfortunately am stuck with it as my main level 70 which irritatees me today. So make sure you like your race or realise you dont like it at a low level.
i hate my troll soo much im tempted to make a belf mage to replace it and delete my troll one lol

I'm happy as an undead mage, but many times find myself wishing I were a gnome. Not so much for the racials, but more for the looks/style when they play. When I watch a really amazing gnome mage in PVP, I think thats what a mage is supposed to look like. Any race can do the same thing, but gnomes do it with the most style >.>
