Vague leveling opinion questionFollow

So, my hunter is level 60 right now, and I'm going to start leveling him. The problem is... how?

Leveling has gotten boring for me. I have multiple characters (4 right now) between level 60 and 63, and HFP always seems to suck out my desire to play. Granted, my Retribution Paladin is a great deal of fun now, but... I just like the playstyle and hate the actual leveling part.

My hunter has been BM all this time, mostly since he has done a lot of BGs at level 59. Now that I'm leveling again, there seems to be a ton of choices on the different specs and how to do it. I have a Ravager pet (formerly a great DPS pet), but have no problem with switching. I also respecced post-3.0.2 as BM again, but I could easily switch that.

Some ideas I have heard:

1. "Gorilladin!" This sounds like a blast; playing a hunter as an AoE grind seems really neat! I've never used a gorilla before.

2. "Devilsaur is awesome DPS." But he waddles :-( Still, it could be worthwhile and a lot of fun.

3. "Try MM or SV instead." I haven't heard many opinions about these, besides that they're inferior to BM for leveling purposes. Anyone take these up, and care to offer an explanation as to why? I'm not sure how worthwhile the exotic pets are, or how much that final talent in the BM tree is worth...

I'd at least try a gorilla, I've had a lot of fun with mine but I've not tried levelling with one (tamed at 70).
In my opinion though, a gorilla is one of the best tanking pets.

Any pet. Any specc. Any tactic. All is viable. All is doable.

Now, for optimum leveling:

1. BM Specc. Obviously.
2. Tank pet of some sort. Gorilla is nice.
3. Quest alot. Pure grinding has been slowed down compared to quest xp.

No more than that is necessary. As for MM and Surv, yes it's easily doable to level as both. However, Surv is not really a leveling specc, or soloing specc at all. Your pet is worse than even a MM pet, and you'll find yourself kiting more than you'd do with another specc. Still, with the new patch and a Tenacity pet, Surv isn't hard to level as either.

Just do what you feel like, with the specc you feel like. Personally, I'm sticking with Humar and a raiding BM specc. Soloes just like it used to, and does massive dps in instances.

I poked around with exotics a little bit and found that a worm pet holds excellent single-target aggro, and the acid spit armor debuff noticeably improves personal DPS. I believe I will use one for 70-80 (as I predict a lack of AoE killings available when Northrend is booked to capacity).

Only at lvl 70, getting 51 BM means no Go for the Throat, wich equals suck.
And at lvl 80, It'll mean no readiness, wich is equally bad.

It wouldn't be as bad if the exotic pets were awesome, but they aren't....

If you get a devilsaur at level 60, it'll ultimately lower your DPS by a great deal. First of all, it's not even possible at level 70 to have a devilsaur and Go for the Throat, which is the lifeblood of your pet's DPS. Without it, it doesn't matter what its potential is, it just won't be able to do it. You'll get much higher DPS with a cat that has focus. Second, you'll miss out on having 5% extra crit, and 100% of your intellect returned as AP (often with a level 60, that's more than 100 AP). No pet can make up for that kind of DPS loss.

What I suggest is a build like this, and a good tanking pet like a Gorilla. Your next points going towards TBW, 3 points into Longevity (for super frequent thunderstomps!), and then kindred spirits. After those, go back to the MM tree and start filling that out.

It might be slower, but you can stay in the Plague Lands til around 62-63.

Go to HFP for the quest gear (to update) and then go back (if HFP sucks out the life that bad).

I did this on my Ally BM Hunter, as I had just did HFP on my Horde and really didn't want to go through it again so quickly.

Then you can just head up to Zangamarsh.

Freaking awesome post. Totally captured the problems I felt (but could not explain) with the Exotic Pets right now, and gave a great build idea to boot. Thank you thank you thank you!

Thanks to everyone else as well for the input. And sandinmygum, that's almost exactly what I'm doing; went back to the plaguelands, and thinking of hitting up Silithus. It also helps to level my Gorilla, because the enemies are slightly lower level (56-57) instead of 59-61. Thank you all!

I can agree the gorilla is good fun , when i tried ones ages ago the thunder stomp was a waste of time but now all i can say is i hope they do not get nerfed .

Best thing i find with hunters is they are about the fastest gatherers there are in the game except perhaps for Mages at high level with their aoe spells , and allowing the pets to choose their targets is my way to prevent full boredom mode , granted any quests do take ages as i get diverted a lot but is more than made up by all the greens i get.

It's not quite that bad. You're not trading BM for readiness. You're trading a bunch of BM talents plus the final one for readiness, or tracking and the BM talent for readiness and efficiency. I think it'll depend on mana. If efficiency isn't needed, I don't see myself wasting those 5 points just to get readiness, I don't think it's a big enough boost. You've listed it as 1.5%? I haven't looked at the math, but it seems fairly reasonable. just not for 6 points.

HFP sucks. I hate that zone. Your problem is you have too many toons in the same level range. You need to get one out of there a.s.a.p. Change of pace. Another thing you could do is like someone mentioned go back to old world and do quests there. While you're doing that you can leave your LFG flag on and be looking for instances.
