First time in Black TempleFollow

Hi there! So, my guild's organizing a Black Temple run tonight. It'll be my first time there, so I have a few questions.

What would be the best spec for me, a full epic Kara / SSC gear mage in 8xx spelldamage unbuffed? Heard good things about frost, but I'm not sure.

Are there any great glyphs for x spec you would like to see me raid my first BT as? Haven't touched glyphs or any of those items so far, know nothing about them.

Other general tips are welcome aswell ofcourse.

Thanks in advance!

Are you going to be the mage tank for the Illidari Council? If so, consider going arcane so you get the full spell hit for spellsteal. Also, I ran BT last night as full arcane and I can definetly see the difference in the mana cost reduction of the patch. I used a Arcance Barrage, Arcane Blast*3, Arcane Barrage rotation, with Missile Barrage anytime it proc'd and I didn't have a problem with Mana. One not on that is that I run with about a 12.5-13k mana pool. Depending on your Mana Pool you may want to reduce that to a Arcane Blast *3 rotation. If you are going to go Arcane I recommend the Mage Armor Glyph for the mana regen and the Arcane Power for the 3 extra seconds. The Arcane Power one is "meh", but the Mage Armor is great. I also recommend using the "Flask of Distilled Wisdom" That Elixir is great for Arcane for 2 reasons. More intellect bigger mana pool and the Mind Mastery Talent that increases your spell dmg by a % of your total intellect.

Frost is fine as well:

Fire gets a little iffy because of Illidans Fire elementals which I faced for the first time last week when we downed him.

I am not going to be the Mage tank, no. Thank you for your advice anyway, gave me some general ideas :)

I wouldn't expect them to be getting to Council especially if they don't have the SR gear crafted, so I wouldn't worry about that or Illidan.

Overall, since the instances have been nerfed so much the spec isn't all that important, what have you been raiding as (link your armory or whatever). For glyphs I am using mana gem and imp scorch as I raid as fire.

So have you never seen the inside of TK or Hyjal? Just curious.

I have raided mainly as Fire earlier. Been mostly to kara, a few (3?) SSC bosses, VR once in TK, and I just recently went to MH to kill Azgalor or whatever first bosses name is, and got Archimonde to 46%. That's my raiding progress so far.

Armory: http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Silvermoon&n=Frostshiver

Currently in PvP gear, not updated, but my pve gear gives me 148 hit, 962 unbuffed SPD (as arcane) and 11k mana. I am although 61 Arcane so... Bit lower actual stats.

IF you feel comfortable with arcane you should give it a shot, go with a 58/3/0 build if you want picking up 3 points in incineration to get the extra crit chance.

Not that used to it, and tbh I'd prefer Fire or Frost or maybe an ap build over full arcane. Got any recommendations?

You can't get to Pyro withoug giving up Arcane Barrage. That is not a good trade. You would be giving up a powerful spell that can be cast every 3 secs and can proc Missle barrage for a Spell you can only cast every 2 mins that has a decent chance of missing because of your low spell hit. Anobix, please chime in here, but at lvl 70 I see Arcane as only being viable if you get just enough points for focus magic or go full monty. Here are my two suggested builds for fire and frost:

Frost:

Fire - some of these talents depend on whether you have anothere fire mage in your group and how you will coordinate. For instance, if the other mage in your group is going to do scroch, then you dont' need to put points in incenration since you will rarely be casting it. Also, they have changed it so Living Bomb stacks, so you guys both might want to talent into that. It depends on your group style.

Thanks a lot. Gonna go frost, but your frost build links me to a 3 arcane focus spec only :(

I went to BT as basically...my very first raid. I'd been to Kara a couple of times, but neither were successful, and I spent both of them about half the time lying on the floor, watching the fight dead, lol.

I went to BT with similar stats as yours, with a frost build similar to the one mgjr linked. If I am allowed to do it over, I'll take a full 61 points in frost. (Don't look at my build right now, it needs tweaking, but there are some nice onces in the Improved Frostbolt thread). I just have the evocation glyph so far (well, and the penguin, which doesn't really affect anything), but I'm going to get the mana gem one today. I didn't have any mana problems, though, with the regular gem. I had some pots, maybe chugged one, but I don't remember.

We got to Mother and though we got her down, it was really horrid, because there were only a couple of people who had SR gear (I did not, as I didn't think there was any way in hell I'd be allowed to go, so I thought I had another week to work on the SR gear, thus I died every time). Anyway, I worked my *** off to get the SR gear for the next try, and though not all of us had SR gear, we still got Mother down much more quickly and tried the Council. The point is, though, that I lived through the fight with Mother because I did have the SR gear, so work on that as much as you can. (I had 238 SR, but just get as much as you can, that **** is expensive to have crafted.)

Our guild is kind of up in the air about raiding and etc right now, so we still have not seen the Council down, but I hope to before the expansion, just so I can SEE Illidan. :)

Anyway, my advice as a brand new newbie raider is to become as agile as you can in your play style. I have spent most of the time up to lvl 70 standing still (with the exception of some PVP), but if you can learn to follow someone's orders while they're calling the shots, stacking when they say, avoiding moving dangers, etc, you'll do fine. It's something I'm working hard on and getting better at.

Also, go to bosskillers.com and read the strats for each boss. I came away from that site feeling a little more confused than when I went, but once the raid was actually happening, I found that I remembered some things from the strats that helped me tremendously.

And if this is your guild's first try, don't be disappointed if you can't get all the way through the first time unless you have a lot of hours to spend on it tonite. You have a lot of people learning a lot of different things, so it takes practice (Bloodboil is FUN!)

Good luck, and have fun! I hope your raid leader is as knowledgable and patient as mine! :) Let us know how it goes. :)

P.S. Get your hit up as much as you can towards cap, and spend some gold on consumables. I'm a superior wizard oil addict (for a little while longer, sigh), and I like the adept's elixir (though something like Flask of Pure Death might be less expensive if you end up dying a lot and are spec'd frost or fire), and buff food.

The 3 points in Arcane are there solely for Illidari council. Even if you aren't mage tanking you may be responsible for Counterspelling the greater heal. It's VERY important that those greater heals don't get off. If you aren't responsible for mage tanking or counterspelling the greater heal you can switch those into frost.

My guild is continuing to raid till wrath comes out. I have been able to get two pieces of T6 Gear and two great rings from our recent raids. Better gear makes for faster and more fun leveling.

I respec'd real quick before last night's raid. That'll teach me to do it "real quick." lol. First, I really didn't need the extra hit, since we had 3, maybe 4 mages on the spellstealing, and second, I totally left FoF out of my build. Not sure how I did that. Anyway, sitting at the entrance, another mage from the guild told me my build needed work, and I asked if he'd gimme a yell after the raid to talk about it. Now I think I have a decent raiding build...but I don't like it in PVP, and won't like it for lvling, so I hope they implement that dual-spec deal pretty soon.

Anyway, how did your BT go? We have a small window of time when all our main raiders can be on, so we cleared everything up to Bloodboil, and it was pretty smooth for the most part, so I'm hoping we can do Bloodboil, Mother and Council tonite, with Illidan left for the rest of the week. :) I think we were all surprised at how well we did, since the attempts before were clumsy-ish and a lot of us were sick/tired last nite.
#14 Nov 06 2008 at 4:46 PM Rating: Good
So you got Reliquary and Teron Gorefiend down in one night as well? fairly impressive that you weren't stuck by a bunch of bads with their constructs. Then again he is such a pushover that only one or two people get them now.

That being said... you don't have 4 mages spellstealing for council... you have one, they are the tank. Like for the HKM fight.
#15 Nov 07 2008 at 5:46 AM Rating: Decent
Yeah, we got RoS (one shot baby!) and Gorefiend down, but everyone was kinda sickly, so we stopped there. We'd gotten them down before, so it wasn't really a problem.

Last night didn't go as smoothly, though, still a bunch of sick folks. We still had a much rougher time with Bloodboil and Mother than we expected, especially Mother, because we were much better geared for her. She just kept teleporting people right straight into the raid, bleh. Anyway, I won't be that tanking mage. I have less than 8k HP + I'm still a noob, though I have read strats over and over and think I'm about as prepared as I can be. We'll see. I -really- hope we raid tonite, though. I do think I need to tweak my build ONE more time (hahahaha) beforehand, though.

OP, how is your BT going?

P.S. (I dunno the HKM fight lol. People were laughing at me last night because I didn't get an invite to Gruul's Lair cuz I didn't know the fights, but I'm raiding BT. weee)

I almost wish we had ann additional two weeks before wrath. We are clearing through BT easily. We went to Sunwell this week and got Kalegos down yesterday. (That fight is buggy, we wiped a lot because people couldn't get into the portals) With two more weeks I think we would at least get some attempts in on the BIG guy.

For Teron, we are now just ignoring the constructs and burning him down. 4 Mages, thats great. We only have 2 including me.

The fight isn't buggy, one person can go through every 1.5 seconds I believe.

Unless you are all wearing SR gear (250+, 300+ preferred) you are not 'geared for mother'. The fight is there as a psuedo-pacing mechaninism to make people farm the hearts out of BT/Hyjal (or buy them... they are dirt cheap on my server now [like 100g if you are lucky, I used to sell for 4-500g a piece])

Ouch, your definition of dirt cheap, and mine are different. lol. I believe I needed 9 HoDs to get my stuff made, 1 of which was given to me free from the gbank. Add in the primal shadows, etc, and I spent over 1600g on my gear. Had I known I would even be a candidate for an invite, I would've been able to farm some of the stuff, but that's still 800g, which is a hit to my Epic Mount Trust Fund. :)

Here's hoping that my guild decided to raid and downed the rest of the bosses tonite. My baby decided to develop asthma and ended up in the ER today, so I've been napping from that episode, as well as getting up and making sure he has whatever he needs. I'll pop in and check on the guild in a bit, if he can get a little sleep after his next meds.

Still interested in how NAE's BT went!! :)

I spent 3200g on hearts alone to upgrade my bracers from the haste badge ones to the crafted haste BT bracers. 100g is dirt cheap compared to the old days.
#20 Nov 08 2008 at 2:06 AM Rating: Decent
I guess "cheap" is relative to the situation. 3200g might not be a lot of money if I had a goal of doing that in mind, and did it. 1600g for an "oh ****, I gotta get this gear cuz I'm gonna be doing this raid" when I had about 3200 I'd been working towards an epic mount with was a LOT. :)

Anyway, I got my epic mount tonite, so I'm happycamper. :)
#21 Nov 08 2008 at 5:10 AM Rating: Good
And this is partially why pre-nerf it was a lot easier to do this stuff because you would never get to Mother in your first week of raiding. We had hundreds of hearts by the time we got to her and can't give the damn things away right now.

Sorry I haven't been responding, Trilliandent, I ... basically forgot this thread :)

Anyway, how did my BT go? It didn't. I was kinda thrilled, had gotten lots of consumables to be able to put up my A game, read up on every boss and trash tactic, I even played that ghost simulator on Wowwiki till I could down them fast... And guess what?

Too little interest, raids are off this week *cry* So I'm pretty certain I won't get to see BT before WotLK is out.

Although congrats on your progress Trill :)
