profesions for rogueFollow

#1 Nov 03 2008 at 4:02 PM Rating: Decent
I have just started a gnome rogue and I am confused on what professions. My main is a druid with alchemy + herblism, what would be a good compliment with that?

If you're casual then it doesn't really matter, just pick something and try it out. If you think it looks like fun, there ya go.

For hardcore players it's Leatherworking/Engineering (Drums/Goggles) for PvE-raiding, Jewelcrafting/Engineering (Pather Trink/Goggles) for PvP-arena. This may change slightly in WotLK but I'm not seeing too much to turn most players away from these combos just yet.

not to hijack, but i havent played beta or live in 2 months,

Are they doing anything about drum rotation gimmicks? I thought I read this somewhere

And before 70 there is no reason to have anything but two gathering such as herb/mine or skin/mine whatever

Drums now give a debuff that keeps multiple LWers from chaining drums.

I leveled 1-70 as skin/LW and found it very helpful for making quest rewards, gear while leveling, and keeping myself outfitted with armor kits. Granted with two gathering skills you can simply buy this stuff as needed, but I think that saying that two gathering skills is the only way to go is very closed minded.

One BoP item that can't be obtained from the ah that's useful?

Not sure which particular singular BoP item you are referring to, but as I mentioned in my original post, which you quoted, was that I found it convienient to be able to make those items for myself and freinds as needed.

This same thing has been debated over and again in the Tradeskills forum. Yes, two gathering skills leads to butt loads of money. I have a skin/herb alt that is swimming in more gold than my 70. Yes, you can buy most of the stuff that crafting skills allow you to make on the AH with all the butt loads of money you got with your gathering skill.

I on the other hand, liked to experience the crafting as I was leveling, which is what the crafting skills were intended for.

And yes, I still think it is close minded and misleading to tell a new player that the only choice is to take two gathering skills and if they don't yell at them "UrDoinItRong"

In regards to the OPs original question, here is a rundown of Profs and how they can help rogues.

Leatherworking - Make your own armor and armor kits while leveling, also some decent BoP epics at 375 with elemental LW. Drums are also useful in endgame raiding. This is typically paired with Skinning.

Engineering - Has some fun toys to play with, like bombs, and you can make goggles thoughout your career, although few seem to be itmemized to rogues until you reach the Deathblows. Goggles are awesome at endgame, and you can be a savior in a 5 man with vanish and then use your jumper cables on the healer (if they work). This is typically paired with Mining.

Jewelcrafting - Make some nice jewelry throughout your carreer, as well as the BoP trinks. Being able to cut your own gems will save you money in outlands. You can also use prospecting for profit by buying cheap ore in hopes of getting nice gems. This is typically paired with Mining.

Enchanting - Enchant your own gear, DE all those worthless quest rewards, and be the go to guy when someone gets a new piece of epic. The ring enchants are a little meh for rogues, but it still a worthwhile profession. Can also be used as a gathering profession by buying items on the AH and DEing to sell the mats.

Tailoring - Not really the drink of choice of the rogue generation. The only thing that is truly worthwhile would be bags, and those are easily purchased.

Blacksmithing - Again, not a lot to go with either. None of the armor can be worn. Weaponsmithing offers some epics, but nothing that really glows for a rogue. This is typically paired with Mining.

Alchemy - You already have one, but to clarify, this is another that can be beneficial to a rogue. Making your own pots, flasks, elixirs or transmutes cuts out the dependancy on others. Not a bad choice, but may not be the top choice.
