I'm leveling as a Protection paladin with a friend (Mage) and I can't figure out what sort of stats I should be looking at on my character. I just hit 40, so that opens up the world of plate armor. Should I be looking at +STR +STA? +DEF +STR? +STA +DEF? A combonation? Any input is appreciated!

At 40, you should focus on Stamina first, Strength next, then some Agility and Defense. You won't find much real tank stuff, and mail/plate will spell power is just rare at that point.

Don't go crazy with gear when you're leveling.

Get Stamina whenever it's available, then get strength, spell power.

Leveling with a mage, I guess you are doing a lot of AOE. You will need good HP (Obviously) but you don't get to convert Stamina to spell power until 52 (you get full 30% at 52.)

A lot of palys will tell you - get strength, but until you get "Touched by the Light" you don't get to convert stamina to spell power.

So - be careful with the strength. Make sure you squishy mage isn't pulling agro cause your spell power is too low.

I would stack strength(/AP) and agi(/crit) for leveling, and keep a set of high stam/defensive stats gear for when you need to tank an instance.

At only level 40, gear for a Prot Pally really doesn't exist yet. Sure there are a few pieces with +DEF on them, but not that many. Until you get the higher talents, stamina doesn't convert to spell power yet either. The best way to generate threat at level 40 is probably going to be +Strength and +Agility. You still need Stamina to survive, so don't ignore it.

Once you get Touched by the Light talent, stack stamina like crazy and it will greatly increase both your surviveability and your threat generation. You will also still want strength (which was not the case for a Prot Pally in the past) once you have Touched by the Light, but it is still by far not as important as stamina once you have the Touched talent.

For now, any plate that is "of the Bear" is certainly suitable, and in your late 50's to early 60's, any "of the Beast" plate is great. Once you hit mid-60s or so you will start to put together a more traditional tanking set of defensive/stamina gear.

For now, if you get a good piece of armor or a shield with +def on it, don't ignore it, but if a better piece drops that doesn't have +def, use the better piece.
