Guardian spirit - should I let the tank 'die'?Follow

#1 Oct 31 2008 at 7:59 AM Rating: Decent
Well, as the subject says - is it a good idea to use the guardian spirit to let the tank health drop so the guardian sacrifices himself and heals the tank for 50% life? The Spirit only lasts 10sec, so if it is gone there is no more profit. So why not use it fully to rest for a while, save mana by not healing, and have Guardian restore the tank to 50% and only then take up healing again?
Just a thought - anybody considered this already?

in pve i was generally using it as a safety net ability for healing things that have 2 tanks

renew, gs main tank, heal offtank, shield main tank at 1 sec remaining on GS, then start a gheal

if gs pops, then switch earlier

just makes healing 2 people a lot easier

but if you gonna let the tank die on purpose

1- wait for all defensive abiitys to be on cd
2- tell tank to not use them at all
3- cast cancel gheals constantly until gs pops, then let one go thru

or renew-shield-GS-hymn of hope works well too

Can I ask in a related subject, having not played with Guardian Spirit yet as I haven't managed to get that far down the holy tree (not giving up Meditation yet) how does it work?

If it simply refunds 50% health to the tank the minute he hits 0 then yeah I can see allowing the tank to die certainly of strategic value in certain circumstances, though of course you'll need some communication to coordinate the suicide nature of it :P

If on the other hands there's a slight delay and the tank dies then insta-resses the tank then isn't there a danger of a threat wipe for the tank? Which isn't necessarily so good.

Again I need more information from you kindly posters before coming to my own conclusion on this. :)

I have not had the balls yet to try an let the tank "die" so I can't tell :)
I am just thinking about it.
But it is tempting mana-wise - 50% of the tank health is worth 2 GHeals, vs having the same time in FSR to recover ~200 mana. Almost 1500 mana gain altogether.

I personally can't comment on the spell either - like s/o else said, I can't give up meditation ^^ ( /wrist on healing priests I see running around w/o meditation!!) :p . But from reading the talent - I would assume it's sort of a last resort spell when things are going bad.

I'm almost tempted to re-spec for an hour and find a tank who's willing to experiment, just to see how it works ^^

A very good question...here's my opinion.

I had GS for about 3 weeks....found it was better to have meditation so I went back to it and gave up GS (as all healing priests should!!) but I did learn 1 thing : communication is key when using it. To answer your question, YES...let the tank die, but only in the 10 seconds that GS is on him. Before you do this, however, you need to talk to both the tank(s), as well as other healers in your raid group. Make sure they all know that the tank must not be healed in any way during this time. This is used as a last resort method in this way, although it can be used mid fight just to gain time for mana regen or to heal others, in which case you're not letting him die anyway. But as a quick save when things get really chaotic, it works really well. Just make sure everyone involved knows whats going on. I personally have saved wipes using GS in this way, and a few people have asked "what was that" after it was over, showing me that not alot of people who have never been a healer really know anything about GS. Therefore I say again : communication is key!

That being said....drop it for meditation and wait till xpac gives us more talent points to use before picking it up again.

I've tried to write a reply to this thread about 3 times and everytime I ended up just pushing the 'back' button.

It's actually a 'problem' I'm really stuck on myself; to heal or not to heal. I'd actually be glad if they removed the +healing component and made it stick with a castable Cheat Death, in this case.

As for how/when/why... Not really a clue. I reckon it's really situational, specifically in PvP. If you throw it and you notice your target stops taking damage, you might as well use the +healing component and throw him a heal. If you throw it on a target that's being focussed down... It generally fades before you can get a heal off anyway.

Edit: And as to reply to Olithan; he's completely right. If you *seriously* want to heal (raids), you will need to pick meditation over this talent at level 70. Ofcourse you can just as well simply play around with it; I've actually sacrificed meditation for GS just because I could.
