Mage Tanking Gear?Follow

#1 Oct 30 2008 at 7:53 AM Rating: Decent
We're on the Council, and though we spent an hour wiping on it last night, I think we can get them tonite. Anyway, I'm not the mage tank, but just reading about tanking this mage and Gruul got me thinking about getting some tanking gear, but I'm not really sure where to start. My stamina sucks right now, but I'm over hit cap. Damage could certainly use some work.

Anyway, for the veterans out there, what does your tanking gear look like? I'm sitting at just over 7k HP w/ my PVE gear. PVP gear, ug, my hit is so low it's laughable. Maybe a combo of the two?

Any help would be appreciated.

I wear my regular gear aside from 3 things.

1)I switch out one of my rings for the badge ring(the normal one has no stam).

2)I put on my S3 robe that I've enchanted with 150 health and gemmed with all blue stam gems.

3)I wear my Crown of the Sea Witch filled with blue gems and a nice stam enchant courtesy of the SSO.

From there, I just use a Fortification Elixir(or whatever they're called) along with a Major Firepower elixir and 30 stam food.

I used to use the staff out of ZA with nothing but stam gems in it, but since the patch it seems my health has gone up enough to make that unnecessary.

You should be shooting for around 11k with buffs with the exception of a nightmare seed (which should be used at the pull for an extra 2k hp). I pray that the 7k isn't buffed...

My current tanking gear is 5pieces of T6, the hit ring from CE, SCB from SSC, Arcane Resist trinket (for the stam mostly), PvP back + Neck + waist.

I shoot for being close to hit cap, you don't need to be 100% as the only spellsteal that matters to not be resisted is the first one, after that you have a minute to spellsteal again.

When i started mage tanking just get whatever pieces you have that have stam on them, and get a few pieces that have hit. Not too much else you can ask for.

Okay, thanks, guys. I'm not expecting to have to mage tank anytime soon, but I wasn't expecting to be in BT anytime soon either, so I just want to be prepared. That info helps a lot! :)

My tanking kit has the following pure stam pieces:

Commendation of Kael'thas
Unyielding Bracers - gemmed with the +15 one from the ZA quest-line and enchanted with stamina
Commander's Badge if I feel I need a bit more stamina.

Other than that I just have some normal gear pieces (and S1/2) to swap in for low stamina items, I've also got the Scryer's Blade of Focus which has a nice chunk of stamina.

My Gruul tanking kit also had some +stamina greens, but for council you probably want to try and keep a fairly high mana pool too. Don't worry too much about +damage on council though as no-one will be dpsing your target, so threat isn't too much of an issue.

Buffed and using stam food (but not flask) I can get just over 14k hp.

I haven't had much of a problem with that. Then again, with some proper planning and a little luck you can get off a full evocate even without Icy Veins while tanking. Not so in Gruul's. Also, you spellsteal a bit less often, so it makes life easier. Smiley: grin
