What to do...balance or feralFollow

#1 Oct 28 2008 at 6:26 PM Rating: Decent
After the new patch, all my talent points got reset. Now that I don't have to spend gold to unlearn them, I have the chance to start anew!

I have a feral druid level 65 and to this point have not purchased any of my gear. I simply just live by what look I get. I am also starting to get very interested in doing instances (i have done just a couple) and am used to playing solo most of the time (due to schedule). I love my cat but now that I have the chance to switch to Balance, I just don't know what to do.

What are the pros and cons of each? Is cat good for melee or is moonkin just the best for that? I don't know what bearform is like at very high levels but I like the quickness of the cat up to this point.

Thanks for your advice.

With feral spec you can do melee DPS in Cat form and tank in Dire Bear Form. Your casting DPS and healing will be relatively weak due to lack of relevant talents, but with good gear you can play those roles on TV in a pinch.

With balance spec you can do caster DPS in Moonkin form. Decent healing too thanks to mana regen talents and +spellpower gear. Again, your melee combat, in both cat and bear forms, will be pretty weak due to lack of relevant talents and probably gear.

In Cat form you're like a rogue...sneaky little ******* that's focused on dealing damage and not taking it.

Dire Bear Form is the opposite, like a plate-wearing warrior -- awesome survivability thanks to the huge armor boost and with feral talents significant boosts to HP and dodge, but not nearly the DPS of cat form. For instances you'll get more requests to tank than to DPS, but with no real instance experience you better practice in some instances below your level, as a bad tank = wipe city.

So if you like melee combat, and/or want the flexibility of being able to DPS or tank in instances, go Feral.
If you like caster-DPS, and/or want the flexibility of being able to DPS or heal in instances, go Balance.

Pretty sweet and to the point. Thanks.

Now, is there a site that you guys recommend for looking up gear? I have never done quests for the specific purpose of getting xyz equipment (i just wear whatever is better than I equip at the time). Also, a good guide for what a full-set of gear would be at 66 - 70 would be great.

Thanks again.

I've always found this site Pretty handy. Breaks down druid gear by zone and says wether it's Healer, Caster or Feral, though it hasn't been updated since the spellpower change, so anything marked as a healer is likely a good dps piece now too.

I use the site that Micros mentions for picking Gems. It's a great site.

I concur with Jeebar's comment on tanking in instances. When I first got to Outlands and reached level 60 I had a whisper asking me to tank Blood Furnace. It was a disater. I was an inexperienced tank and had lousy gear. Wipe city indeed. To practice tanking I would recommend going back to some of the middle-upper level instances from before Burning Crusades. You won;t get experience points but you're learn how to grab and hold aggro.

I would go balance personally. At 70 in just self buffs, and my own consumables I'm pushing 1800 dps single target. 3-5k dps on aoe depending if I'm spec'd more for aoe than single target.
