Exact Stat Formula?Follow

After leaving FFXI for WoW(shame on me, or praise on me, whichever :p) I've not been able to detach my need to know every detail. In XI, I could pinpoint absolutely -anything- being better than another, in any situation. In WoW? I am so lost my brain hurts...

I've been trying to figure out how to pick gear, and it's tough. Do I want 5Int/5Spr, or 3Int, 11SP? I have -no- clue how to balance Spell Power to Int/Spr/etc... I right now have +54 Spirit and +81 Int with +21 Spell Power. For some reason I can't seem to get my char up on here, or I'd show you my current.
This is close, I guess.

But it leaves out a lot. I have some new gear, but it's all same principle. I ONLY pick up Spell Power, if the +Int/Spr is equal or greater than my old armor so far, and I have higher +SP on my hands, but unsure the exact number.

On that note, any idea how to update that? I'm 38 now, not 34 >.<

Go for something like this:

Lose the healing and discipline crap.

For stats go for spr/sta/int. Spirit for the increased spirit tap. Stamina is good for leveling and int because it's mana.

Spell power doesn't really become a big deal until around 60. I'd rather go for spr/sta/int until then.

I was figuring I should do that, but I noticed how crappy Shadow has been for me. I do 90% of my damage through Holy Fire, casting only PW:P and using Wand on most things, and it beats up to 4 levels higher than me, and on same level mobs I never even hit 80% MP... I picked up Disc for the Inner Fire, not going to lie. The +defense has made me live with 12hp on some crazy bad pulls, and the Holy, as I mentioned Holy Fire seems the best spell Priest has? Shadow all costs oodles of MP and does less damage.
Is this because later on Shadow overcomes it or am I just doinitwrong? >.<

You're doing it wrong.

Actually before shadowform there's no problem opening with holy spells.

while leveling: spirit > int = spellpower = mp5 > stam imo

spellpower is a efficency stat, it raises your damage/healing per mana, but being an efficency stat, it gets better the more you have

until you can stack it to any point worth while, its better to stick to hard stats

my rule of thumb: until outlands, aim for spirit imo

in outlands, spirit and spellpower are about the same item value until 65+

then spellpower pulls ahead a bit

just think like this... slightly better damage per mana isnt gonna be better for leveling then straight mana regen until you get a LOT of spellpower

if you dont think its a lot, it probably isnt ;) just go hard stats until you notice all the gear you see has spellpower on it in addition to hard stats

Pre-Shadowform: Holy Fire -> Pain -> Flay -> Wand
Post-Shadowform: Mind Blast -> Pain -> Flay -> Flay/Wand
Actually, with everyone getting Plague now, Shadowform might be just Blast -> Plague -> Pain -> Wand, I really don't know.

I'd ignore spell power before mid-40's or so. After that, gradually start picking it up. You can get in the region of +200 spell power (very significant) by the mid-50's, but you sacrifice enough spirit and gold to get it that it's often not really worth it and you should just grab what pieces drop for you and otherwise wait till Outlands. Instead, I'd focus on spirit and intellect, probably weighting spirit about twice as good as intellect. As for spell power, I wouldn't shun it; I believe weighting it a little less than intellect pre-Zul'Farrak should be about good.

Huge thanks and rate ups to all of you! I appreciate the help and advice very much. I have been wondering lately, does +13spirit beat +8int +5spirit? Int seems nice for mp.. but the oddity of WoW is that the spells are % based, meaning more MP doesn't seem to help...

Spells are all based on your *BASE* mana pool; the mana you have with zero gear on. Adding more mana through intellect, enchants, whatever, still allows you to cast more spells. It also has the effect of increasing your mana regeneration (regen is based on spirit, but it's also a ratio of spirit:intellect).

For your example of 8int5spirit versus 13 spirit, that's pretty close. What you might want to do is download a mod called RatingBuster, which will tell you exactly how much mana regen you'll get for different pieces of gear when you mouse over them.

Now that I think about it, that's probably the best way of differentiating between different pieces of gear pre-spellpower. Just keep in mind the most often Spirit Tap is up, the more that'll help out (and I believe RatingBuster will adapt to buffs and stuff at the time of the mouse-over, so you could compare the gear both with an without spirit tap up, and make a judgement based on how often spirit tap is up for you).

EDIT: Broke up the wallotext.

Oh wow, thanks :) I didn't know that. I just keep seeing spell costs go up and up, didn't notice when though. Thanks much for the advice :D
