So I'm playing my resto druid right now, my friend is a new 70 warrior who is a pretty clueless tank. I'd like him to l2p so we could have a tank/healer setup for heroics, then it would be as simple as finding 3 dps (so easy on my realm).

He has the gear now from quests, a few lucky drops and some kara/badge gear, but his threat is the problem. He's just not producing any threat, especially on groups of 2 or more mobs. I mean I cast a lifebloom, I have "mobs attacking you!" flash all over my screen.

DPS pull aggro immediately, of course my friend blames them all and says they attack too early, but countless people have left a nasty "l2p" before dropping group so I'm thinking at best, it's a little of both.

Right now his ego seems pretty shattered, I just want to help him out, but I don't play a warrior so I can't really. My thoughts are something like charge->shield bash->thunderclap on multi mob pulls but I'm not sure. Then watch for revenge, thunderclap every CD, shield bash every CD and devestate when possible. But I'm hesitant to tell him that because I don't even know if it's right.

youve pretty much got it right. Tclap whenever its up for aoe pulls, and if hes prot specced, shockwave as well. use devastate/revenge on your main target and shield slam on any nearby targets that are high risk and arent CC'ed. Tclap is usually enough to keep healers from getting aggro, and Tclap+shockwave can usually hold out vs aoe for at least ten seconds or so. in the case of two big CC immune mobs (im thinking the defender pairs in heroic slave pens, or the iron guards or whatever theyre called in later shattered halls) use shield slam + aoe to keep the second add on him while utilizing revenge and devastate on the main target. usually after the first or second shield slam + aoe he should have enough threat to start slamming on the main target, using just the aoe threat skills to hold the second one.

now, if the dps isnt attacking the primary target, then it becomes a bit trickier. but overall its pretty simple; keep Tclap on cooldown (watch out for CC), revenge+devastate on the main target, SS for big threat spikes whenever its needed (main target or otherwise) and shockwave at his discretion, either for threat in an aoe pack or as a means of buying time in a situation where someone else gets aggro (or as a part of the threat rotation, he'll feel it out in time). for big threat spikes, have him use shield block immediately before he shield slams. he can get at least two +100% block value shield slams off in the space of a single shield block, and if sword and board procs, then hes got more. its HUGE for threat as well as damage.

now, thats for prot. if he were arms with relentless assault like i am, hes threat rotation would consist of Tclap whenever its up followed by non-stop spamming of 1s cooldown revenge. i swear, the new revenge in a mix of tank and dps gear is the highest damage ive ever done in a tanking role ever. ive had deep wounds ticking for over 1k thanks to repeated revenge and white crits. and thats with a 1.5s sword!

if he cant hold threat, im assuming he's full prot,
he's not using abilities.

theres no starving of rage now at 70, so he needs to be using roughly 7 abilities every 4 GCDs. He needs to rotate between mobs if he's having a problem with side aggro.

he needs to start all fights with tclap and shockwave, then put up shield block and SS the main target, then rotate and revenge/devestate the side mobs, then return to the main target and go all out, keep Tclapping whenever its up.

prot tanking is so easy now, if he cant generate threat on the side mobs he needs a lot of work.

I like to start with a ranged pull, backing up right after I shoot. As soon as the mobs are in charge range, I charge and start with the devastates. As soon as all non-CC'd mobs get to me, I let loose a shockwave and a Tclap. Its rare that I'll lose aggro after this.
Prior to this last patch, I would spam devastates on successive mobs to hold aggro. However, since Blizz has nerfed things like the mobs in Kara, I find that things die a lot quicker now and I don't have the time or need to really spam devastate on all the mobs. As long as DPS sticks to the kill order, things go quickly.
One thing that I really like to use is the herioc strike glyph. This basically gives a free heroic strike availalbe after every time I revenge. Why use an auto attack when you can do more damage and incraesed threat when you can use a free heroic strike. Of course, use shield slam over heroic strike, as I believe heroic strike causes a GCD.
Also, if your friend is prot. specced and has the warbringer talent, then he can easily use that to charge at enemies even while in combat. I find this helpful in the rare event when a mob does get peeled off me. The charge gets me there instantly, stuns the mob, and allows me to grab aggro again.

Hiya

It seems your warrior friend sucks as I did about a month ago ,but its easy to improve at tanking with some tips at about 1000%

1. BIND attacks to KEYBOARD buttons like Q , E , R (SOSOSOSOSOSOS)

Your left hand fingers must be able to click those buttons very fast-better than using 12345678 buttons.
So the most comonly used attacks could be there.

2.Warrios cause a lot of threat now

So no matter what rotation(hm...?) y use... it seems to Work!! People will say begin with this ... then with that...oh .
Shield slam is considered our most threatening attack. So use this on Skull. then oh .. you ll see..

3.Talens = What talents have you chosen for your warrior???

Our bottom down 6 skills of tree are considered by many as a must have.
Improved defensive skill is considered by many as a must have.

4. Gear is an important factor for Warriors

Better say... What Heroic/Gear you try/got to do? is the right question

You cant run all heroics with same gear m8.
Start with SP as practice then move up ,UB..... Practice will make you perfect
If you try heroics starting with mgt... then BEST LUCK !!

5.Do you mark mobs?

6.Macros for me is as much important as GEAR

The easiest by far macro is mouseover. You hit any mob you like with any attack you like just by applying your mouse cursor over the desired mob (without clicking mouse) while at the same time your locked (autoattack) on SKULL. This way you can MULTI TANK +4 mobs using only 4-5 attack buttons. (I have bound 1 attack + shield block)

example

macro mouse over ---> Devastate(+shield block?) : Binded to Q
Revenge--->Binded to R
Shield slam--> To E
Shield bash--> F

Put thunderclap somewere you can easily find it.Get glyph of TC to reduce TC rage

Fight example that y must master:

Scenario 1:
Rage= 0
Able to charge? No! (groups of mobs are around)
Targets: All melee type... like UB 1st group
All rage potions/abilities are on cooldown
Los Required= NO

Tested with:
Armour 14.000+
Health=12.500+
Expertise=30+
Hit=40+
block value= hm... :))

a.Cast/throw/shoot Skull (the attack has begun -message 'your too far away' is seen-autoattack is already 'on')

b.4 mobs come marked with skull ,x ,moon , bla bla

c.Due to 'Damage shiled' talent as soon as mobs hit you you gain a small but nessecary initial threat over them..the mobs cant flee if they r not attacked by dps-your not healed

d. From the moment they touch you till the moment SS (rage fo ss) is up is 1.3? seconds ( the number is not accureate but its just another way of saying that SS will be up very very fast) Cast shield slam.(cast bloodrage to accelerate SS's up if possible)
Thats is ... the Skull is over you no matter what dps do.

(The DPS/Healing should comence idealy at that point. If your life drops too fast-lets say at 30%- when you get to 'd' and need super healing maybe-it s more than just maybe there is a chance the gear your wearing is not that great...

e.Then you got to earn a bit more threat over the other mobs.
By the time the SS is completed thunderclap ,Revenge,Shiled bash,Devaste,shockwave is up.
Cast Thunderclap [or shockwave or the aggro all ability (i dont remember its name) - only if your not confident]

f.Then revenge or shiled bash or both on skull

g. During 'f' your mouse should be on 'x' (any other target but skull) target casting (after f)a macro-mouseover attack bound to 'Q' (or wahtever you please)button -its better to bind Devaste(?) cause y can see the spell grafic working on 'x' 's mobs head: A magic sword appears hitting mobs head.

h. Whatever ability is on bound on 'E' ,'R' , 'F' buttons click it. (skull is again hit)

i.Your mouse goes to 'star' mob and you do the mouse over to him. (or TC)

j.repeat h with preference to SS. ( cast 2 of 'E' ,'R' ,'F' or even 'Q')

k. repeat i on 'moon' mob

Once 'Skull' is down auto attack the 'x' mob and repeat with h,i,j,k ...

If you master this.. OMG... you can run SP in 30 min

The above is not theory crafting material but tested in practise and it works.
Oh put vigilence on to somebody... it wont really matter anyway...

The above IS NOT A GUIDE ( its more that coffe break from work :))) ) ,its not to prove anything ,its not to start a debade about how one s does this over the other.
Its just something I normally do that earned me the respect of my guild while I escord guildies to Coilfang and Hellfire fun badge runs.
As I said Warriors now have improved threat and talents/moves/abilities can be modified according to players playstyle.Not all abilities/glyphs is used in this example.(heroic Strike,sunder armour for example).Attacks can be bound also to mouse buttons -wheel up or down or to whatever keys y like. Do it ! Try it!

Since I tried the above I have forbiten the use of any CC to SP and UB.
Before it... i had more that 20 wipes in SP(I SUCKED M8). Test it and see...

I shoot the mobs with my crossbow, as the mobs approach me..demo shout, TC, SS, devastate, also after i shoot them i hit bloodrage to start generating rage.I tell dps to wait for a 2 second count then start in. The CC should be set away from your tanking so you can use TC. He needs to make sure he marks the mobs and the others know the order in which to hit first,,second and so on. One of the things i do is when skull is 3/4 down i switch my target to X to get a head start on threat.He doesnt have to worry about skull leaving as he should have enmough threat on it by that time.Also he can use cleave while hitting on skull, that will strike a target close by. But all in all if everyone follows kill order, and he demo shouts and TC as the mob comes in,and oh yes, now you can also use shockwave he should be able to hold threat. One more thing..if he is spec for protection, how is he spec? this is my armory, i think i meesed up on damage shield lol.

Charge,Shield Block,then Shield slam,throw a Devastate or 2 in there,hit Revenge whenever it procs and if you need to pull aggro off of a dps or healer use Taunt and then a Devastate/Shield Slam and you should be good to go on single targets.On AoE pulls ill usually charge,Thunderclap then Demo Shout,and if i get bored a Shockwave every once in a while.Another thing that can help you tank instances is if you mark EVERY pull.Might sound a little much but it helped me get thru sooo many oh **** situations where i pulled too many mobs or the wrong group or whatever.Bind the raid markers to the F1 keys that way you can mark up mobs really fast.That way you can make your group focus fire and follow the kill order.Hope this helps :)
