Defense and AvoidanceFollow

im semi new to pally tanking, and while i feel i can safely assume more avoidance is in no way a bad thing, is more then 490 defense a waste?

i currently have 505 through enchants that i could drop for other things, and since 490 is what you reach to be uncrittable, does that mean anything more is just a waste of space?

505 Defense will give you additional avoidance (dodge, parry, block) over 490 Defense. 490 Defense is a minimum -- after that, you have to weigh extra avoidance vs. stamina vs. threat stats.

If you'd still be over 490 without your current enchants, you can probably improve your stats with new enchants, but it's really dependent on your current gear, gems, enchantsm and what you're looking to do as a (prot) pally.

I like to keep my defense around the low 490s if I still have a good amount of avoidance. The reason for this is I like to keep my stamina up over 1000 if possible.

If you have 505 defense, you chance to be missed completely is a percent or so higher than at 490 defense, which means you will be getting healed less and regenerating less mana via spiritual attunement. I prefer to have higher stam and a bit less chance to be totally missed, so I have a bigger health pool and get healed more often, thereby regenerating mana even faster since I am getting healed. Also I stay up as long or longer because of higher health.

My suggestion would be that your enchants are probably fine, but you could replace any defensive gems with gems that either give pure stam or a mix of defense and stam (depending on whether you care about socket bonuses or not and what color the sockets are).

I've decided for myself that barely over 490 defense is fine, and then stack dodge after that.

Blessing of Sanctuary is my new best friend. Every single attack against me that is not a miss (as long as Holy Shield is up) restores 2% of my mana. Against just one slow-hitting mob (I picked 2.0 attack speed), BoSanct is 261 MP5. You will almost never be fighting just that guy. Especially not right now, with everyone wanting to AoE everything to the ground.

You know those demon hunter trainees near BT? I can pull all of them and end the fight with 95% mana, spamming all of my threat abilities as hard as I can.

Extra defense is more chance to "Miss", which means less mana return on Sanct. Defense isn't a bad stat, though. It's not too far behind Dodge on pure avoidance, and you don't want to be tanking anything serious with no avoidance and just a ton of stam.

so (just to make sure im understanding this right), after 490 def, im better off stacking stam or avoidance? i know BoSanc is a godsend for us but i dont want to drop my extra defense if it would be more beneficial to keep it

and jeromesimina, i gemmed for pure stam from the start, other then in my engineer goggles since the socket bonus makes up for the 6 stam difference in a rare green stam gem

If you gemmed for pure stam from the start and still have 505 defense, there is nothing that says you HAVE to nerf your defense and get better dodge/parry/block; however, as pointed out above, BoSanc only procs off of a hit, dodge, parry or block (not a miss), and also a hit or a block will cause some damage to you thereby allowing you to be healed and causing mana regen via spiritual attunement.

If you aren't having any mana issues with your current setup (and you most likely aren't), then there is no real NEED to change anything at all. You just have a head start on the uncrittable defense number for higher levels, and we will all be levelling again soon.
