Leveling as Prot?Follow

#1 Oct 27 2008 at 11:47 AM Rating: Default
Warrior is stuck at 18 tell I can find a decent to ok prot leveling build. After my Kara run tonight with my hunter I'm going to give it a rest and work on my warrior. Anyone using a good solo prot build. If so how'd you level it. I know nothing about prot warriors now that the new patch is out. Any help will be appreciated.

It's probably going to be faster to level as Arms (my choice) or Fury until Outland (or possibly BRD if you like to run instances), even with the recent buffing of the Protection tree. You won't get a lot of Protection's fun new toys until high levels anyway, and increased Threat when tanking (formerly the big reason to spec into Protection at a low level) is no longer a very big issue as you're leveling up.

That being said, if you really want to level as Protection, here are a few possibilities:
Prot + Cruelty/AttT
Deep Protection

And finally, if you decide to leveling as Arms or Fury, here is a sample build:
Arms

All builds listed are level 50, and are leveling builds. I don't know the theorycraft 110%, but I'd tend to recommend picking up Cruelty immediately (first 5 talent points) and then going from there. If going Prot, I tend to pick up +dmg talents when possible, then fill in with some avoidance talents if I need them to progress in the tree. You don't need the crazy mitigation that you would for a raid boss to level efficiently. Any suggestions to these builds are great -- I leveled (switching between Fury, Arms, and Prot at different times) with the old trees.

i wouldnt go prot until 40 when you get shield slam.
probably 42 so you have 3/3 focused rage or whatever the talent is that lowers rage cost by 3.
ideally you'd wait until 50 for devestate as this adds a ton of damage.

I specced prot at 42 recently on my warrior alt just to see what the hubub was all about.

I'm in love.

With some nice macros in place, I'm easily destroying single targets with 95% health left afterward, many times I'm at 100% with some nice shield slam and revenge crits, I literally went an hour questing yesterday without stopping to eat or bandage.

I was imp slam 2hander spec before (wielding a whirlwind axe) , and I don't think I could go back.

Wait till 40 or so. Go prot. Feel the warm fuzzies I now feel.

I took about a 4 month hiatus just to come back and see the big prep patch for WOtLK. My first and current respec, (war was 61, and is 65 now) has been prot, and there is just something heart-warming about soloing elites 2-3 levels above you, or taking down 3-5 mobs of similar levels just to walk out with 40%+ health. And you still have ur trusty Intimidating Shout if things get hairy. However, I have to agree that its almost pointless to switch till 55ish for devastate. It makes all the difference.

**** Lastlaugh is no longer my main. He is deleted for good reason.

Armored to the teeth is a pretty decent tank talent. Considering how much armor you will have in end game, the damage boost really helps with gaining threat.

Ok i'm going arms route tell 55 or 60. Got geared up. Looking at the arms spec that was previously posted. I guess rend is pretty useful now? I know in previous posts it sounded pretty lame. Thanks for the sample build I'll work off of it. Iron will is not needed seeing as i'm not really tanking but just leveling. I guess deflection isn't needed either? Thanks for all your help. :D

1/3 it's 1 per 180

2/3 it's 2 per 180 or 1 per 90

3/3 it's 3 per 180 or 1 per 60

My 70 warrior in her dps set (a set I use for soloing as dps) is sitting at 7300 ac.

1/3 that's 40.5 AP

2/3 that's 81 AP

3/3 that's 121 AP

Her AP is about 1200. That's a 10% increase. Not that bad really.

Taking ATTT is pretty pointless though at lower levels. What about level 60ish if I decide to stay arms.
