Hey guys,

I've respecced to Moonkin for the first time ever. I have a decent base of spell gear, a mix of a few epics and blues ( I wouldnt say I'm even close to t4 equivalant).

Now I was actually pulled into BT this afternoon on my druid because my other toons were locked... My question for you guys is; what spell rotation on boss encounters should I aim for? My current rotation was IS, FF, Moonfire, Wrath, Wrath, Wrath renew IS and Moonfire... Now I also throw in trinkets, treants and starfall when they are up.

Does this sound right or am i missing something blatant? I didnt actually do too bad on the boss fights, 6th on supremus with a caster heavy raid. Heres the link to my armory, sorry I dont know how to make it a one word clicky link...

Any help tweaking the talents or rotation would be great. My spec was more pieced together just to try it out and will only be for PVE when i do finalize it more.

Thanks for your time.

Pre-patch I would have said use Starfall instead of Wrath since it's more mana intensive, but since the patch I've rarely, if ever gone oom, so if you can do it without being drained, spam that wrath.

Sorry did you mean Starfire? Starfall is the 51 point talent that i'm referring to.

Also on my tooltip, Wrath is 252 mana and Starfire is 367 mana. HOWEVER the Starfire damage (911-1072) and cast time (2.83 sec) are essentially double Wrath's exactly. Is this why you would have suggested Starfire over Wrath as less mana intensive? Or would the chance of more possible crits with more Wrath casts outpace Starfire?

I havent been able to play post patch yet, but I'm pretty sure Starfire still the preferred spell to use since its a lot more mana effecient. The only time I'd use Wrath is when Nature's Grace is up. Still I'm not sure how the spell roation works anymore with Eclipse brought into the equation. Other then that I'd say you were doing fine.

Your build needs some work though ;)

First I would take out the 2 points in Imp. Moonfire and use them to finish up Moonglow. Now I cant tell if Celestial Focus increases your haste permanently or if you only get that bonus when the talent procs. If its the latter then take the points out of CF and put it into Imp. Insect Swarm, otherwise leave it be. Then take out Furor and fill up Wrath of Cenarius instead. It will look something like this. 61/0/0

Your gear also needs a lot of work but I know you know that.

Crit chance will be the same, so there is no difference. Having less spells just provides a smaller sample which could lead to spikey results. I'd show you the math, but I'm a lazy SOB.

Here's my Armory. You can see my gear and my talent makeup. I am also a post-patch Boomkin. I started out with a full resto set, mostly of ZA and Kara gear, with a little Badge thrown in. It was a backup set (1800ish healing pre-patch) as I mostly ran feral. Galenmoon

Anyway, I've been slowly replacing it with more Boomkin gear as I go, increasing my hit and crit rating. Those stats have jumped up quick with a mixture of ZA and SSC gear. I'm mostly in T5 Content atm, heading into Hyjal this week or next though.

I currently have Glyph of Moonfire and Starfire.

I didn't take Eclipse because I hate changing my spell rotation based off a proc. I didn't take Imp IS because I usually crit so much that I'm pushing the tank for threat anyway, so added crit is only going to hurt me at this point. I took Starfall mostly for boss fights where the added DPS is nice in that burndown phase most bosses typically have. It's also nice to have a fire and forget spell. Gale Winds is incredible IMO.

I usually sit, raid buffed at about 1.2k spell power and 22% crit.

My normal trash rotation is Moonfire and Wrath spam unless the tanks are AOE tanking a group, then I just Hurricane, refreshing as it runs out until there are 2 or less mobs, when I usually switch to Wrath spam.

On bosses I give the tank a good 10k threat lead, then I start off with Moonfire, Starfire, Insect Swarm, Starfire, refreshing IS and Moonfire as needed. I usually pop Starfall during burndown phases, or when boss reaches 30%. Also if I notice I have a nice threat gap because the tank is rockin, I will pop my trinkets between Starfires.

With this approach, in every raid I have been on from Kara to SSC, I am running between 1k-1.3k dps. This usually puts me in the top 3 in both dps and overall damage. Last night in ZA the only person who beat me in overall damage was a rogue. And I was about 70 overall dps higher. (Zul'jin is my nemesis. Hate Eagle Phase!)

@ the op

I didnt check your armory, but rotation is all about your gear/spec nowadays. for instance on my end, it is ALWAYS better to use starfire basically because the damage scales so well, i have the sunfire enchant, and the t6 set bonus.

in my earlier days as a moonkin though i found wrath to be the go-to spell. i agree with above posters that mana is not really an issue now, so it seems eclipse may just work out (i havent tried it yet, too much rl stuff to log on much)

for bosses post-patch i use a mf, ff, starfall (when up and feasable) and only starfire. i have the glyph that adds time to the mf dot, so if i really want to i can press one button and pewpew the whole fight. im usually close around 2k dps and on WWS reports i crit about 40-45% of the time with starfire. i am not much of a heavy math man so im not sure if throwing up IS is worth it even with the glyph to improve damage, i know it wasn't pre-patch, it was just to help the tanks.

keep going and trying different stuff. the test dummies in org are SO much better than wasting time at dr boom trying to find the best mana usage/damage rotation. i am going to test out eclipse once the patch hits and are trees arent so bloated. i will reply back with my findings!

The damage and cast time for wrath is about half of Starfire, however the mana cost of wrath is more than half of Starfire. So it works out that Starfire does roughly the same damage without using as much mana. though since Mana isn't much of an issue, go with Wrath. Faster casts give more chances to crit, (which is also more mana regened with new Moonkin form) and might be able to squeeze in an extra wrath where the mob/boss might die in the middle of a Starfire cast.

Thanks for all the awesome input! I'm going to work all those suggestions in, especially the build issues ( I knew i had a prob with it) tomorrow. Hopefully I can get good raid time with him as my raid group knows he's going to be my first raider in WotLK.

Rate up to all the great posts. Lots of love for my first post in the druid forums. Its looking like a great community in this one. :)

Cheers

When you have a url you want to put in, all you need to do is click the URL button and insert the website you want. When you hit OK, it brings up a big long line that looks kinda like this (missing the [] for example purposes

link=http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Thorium+Brotherhood&n=Galenmoon] http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Thorium+Brotherhood&n=Galenmoon [/link

So after the initial pasting of the URL, it closes it with a ] and then pastes it again. If you highlight(it will be automatically after you hit OK, so you can just type whatever you want there) from that ] to [ before /link, then you can type in your name, something funny, etc.

Like this

link=http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Thorium+Brotherhood&n=Galenmoon] Galenmoon[/link

Hope that clears it up for you. :P
