Ret vs. Holy on Paladin HealingFollow

Sheath of Light. A Heal over Time after a heal crit. Something Holy Paladins have been screaming for for years now. It was given to Retribution.

This made me (and probably many other people) wonder if a deep ret spec would be a viable healing spec. So I've been healing 25-mans as both a PvE Holy spec, and an 18/0/43 heal spec.

In my heal gear, I have 120 more bonus healing as the ret spec, with 2% more spell crit.

Ret has Art of War procs vs. Holy's Holy Shock.
Ret has Sheath of Light vs. Holy's Bacon of Light.
Ret has roughly 125 MP5 from JotW vs Holy's 10% haste from Enlightened Judgements.
Ret also gains bonus healing from AP buffs. Fully buffed in mid-battle, that 120 extra from earlier climbed to 250.

The biggest thing Holy has over Ret is Infusion of Light + Light's Grace. Holy Light cast times lower than 1 second make for great emergency healing.

In my mind, Deep Ret is a perfectly viable healing spec, but Pure Holy does better when solo-healing a tank through burst damage, or two tanks taking equal heavy damage.

I need to get to 80 to try out the extra 10 points.

One of my favorites things about Ret healing is that you never go OOM. With Judgements of the Wise, you can constantly keep yourself up, albeit you gimp your healing a little.. Having said that, I would recommend trying this.

Taking out Illumination and Divine Int to take Swift Retribution and Sactified Wraths to lower your Avenging Wrath CD by 1m now that boosts heals too.

A problem now is a nerf to JotW. 20% of total mana was too high. I felt 33% of base was fine, but it's been complained about so much that it's going to 15% of base.

A ret doing just his three main attacks will be running out of mana now.. That makes this a bit worse, but I've healed fine on battles where I have no time to judge.

I took Illumination because the spec is based on a very high crit rate. Skipping MP5 whenever there's crit. You have to crit a judgement to get instant FoLs, and you have to crit a heal to get the HoT. Getting mana returned on crits just seems obvious. I guess at 80, you can get it back, but then you miss any points in Holy Power.

Edit: I see this at 80

A guaranteed heal crit ability, +6% crit on Holy Light, and then 3% more crit on holy spells. Divine Intellect is just filler points. Not sure where to put those three to get farther down.

Ret healing in arenas is going to be clutch. In terms of PvE it allows them to fall back and heal if needed much like a prot pally could before. That FoL glyp is made for ret pallies. The spike dps they are bringing is going to be toned down but they are in a very strong position for dipiss in Wotlk both in arena and pve. The dps is justifiable, the mana regen and utility is there, clutch heals with LoH, and a insta cast FoL that is a hot = sex.

Holy Paladins got Beacon (Bacon!). Not only that but the new 3.0.3 (coming out before expac) will see Jotpure give 15% instead of 10% haste and Holy Shock crits now make FoL insta cast as well as take 1 second off HL. Beacon is such a strong tool that it boggles the mind. I have been testing it out and as I get more comfortable with it and keeping it in place I find my healing is going through the roof. Fights like Brutallus, Twins, Council, or even lesser fights like Azgalor, Supremus etc where multiple tanks are taking damage or there is a lot of raid damage but tank is taking consistent damage i just blow things up. I have seen fights where I used to hustle to keep up with certain healers and now I am doing 200K+ more healing than them.

3.0.2 was good to us in terms of healing.
