What exactly is this 'set focus' thing we have now?
I don't recall seeing it pre-patch, or just never noticed anyways. I'm still getting used to our new pet action bars as well, all that swirling has me confused as to what buttons are activated or not.

Setting focus has been available for quite a while. However it was not as obvious. With patch 3 we get the nifty new avatar to pop up showing our focus target. I like it. Now its a bit harder to accidentally pull with the priest as your misdirect target. :p

I've never used it, how does it work? We select the MT as focus, then the pet will auto attack his targets, misdirect automatically goes on him?

Not really. It just sets a target as a separate target you can always return to when you have targeted something else. Very useful in macros and such for CC, MD and so on. I personally love focus macros for CC. Let's take the one I use on my Priest as an example:

/focus [target=focus,noexists]
/stopcasting
/cast [target=focus]Shackle Undead

The first time you use it, it sets your focus target to your current target and shackles it. Each subsequent time you use it it will reshackle your focus target. When you use it and you have no target, or your target is dead it will set your focus target to blank, and focus on your current target (if you have one). I only use it because I like keeping the MT targeted when possible so I can see the predicted incoming heals more easily.

You can set other things like Banish or Polymorph in the same macro. It's lovely. Now, if you use Misdirection on the tank for instance, it will keep firing Misdirect on the tank every time you hit the macro until the tank is dead. At which point your friendly target will be set as the next focus target.

This way you'll never have to drop targeting on a boss for instance.

Well, you can kind of do that with an additional macro. You can set your MT as your focus, and use the macro

/cast [target=focus] Misdirection

And it'll always cast on your focus target.

You can even go a little bit further and set a keybinding to select someone as a focus. I have my interface set up so I can click on someone in the raid frame, hit shift+0 (or some modifier. I can't always remember until I'm looking at it, lol). It's so nice for raiding when something gets away, or you're asked to chain MD a boss onto your Main tank. Instead of casting it, and finding your tank, you just hit the Misdirection button, and it does it's thing.

I've been using the focus macro for months now. It's a beautiful thing. And the best part is, NO ADD ON REQUIRED!

I'll have to try that. I've been dragging the tank(s) name out of the raid window, if they were'nt already shown on the 5 portraits for my group, clicking on MD, and then their portrait. A lot of clicking I guess, keeps me busy I suppose.

/assist focus

Most excellent, mash macro and automatically target the tanks target. Just make sure it is skull and go to town.

Now if I could only stop attacking the closest target when skull dies, it is usually a sheep.....

I would also reccomend getting a unit frame addon like pitbull or AG_unit frames. These will allow you to have another unit frame for your focus and his target, similar to the current target etc. It's extremely useful
