I'll take a whack at it. I'd read through the forums here for some really good info on playing a pally, but since the new patch talents have changed quite a bit and right now there really isn't a true tank build yet. The Blizzard site gives some great info on what a Paladin is, and I'd hit the stickies here for more info.

That said, here's my build. It's working really well so far.

I've got a nice little macro involving Righteous Defense, which I think I got from Cap Jack's FAQ. Works great for regaining threat/aggro/hate.

As some have said, the stickies are somewhat out of date now, however they are still mostly correct.

Your talent tree will vary wildly depending on WHAT SORT of Paladin you wish to be. It used to be that Holy was for healing, Protection was for tanking, and Ret was for levelling from 1-60 or so and then getting laughed at/forced to respec.

This is no longer the case. Holy is still the best single-tarket healer in the game, and has had some multi-target and heal over time things added recently. Protection is still a great tank, and has been made even better recently, and Retribution can now DPS with the best of other classes as well as having the utility to provide buffs, off-healing, and other tricks and treats to help whole parties/raids.

So, the question isn't really "what does a Paladin do?", it is more "Ok, I have decided to play a Paladin, what do _I_ want to do?" If you want to be a great healer, read up on Holy and go that route. If you want to be a tank and be able to take on 10-12 mobs at once and survive, read up on Protection and go that route. If you want to SMASH FACE and still provide buffs, some good healing, emergency buttons to keep others alive, ressurection when needed, etc. then read up on Retribution and go that route.

Also, you can change your talent tree whenever you wish to, but it costs gold to do so, and the more you change your tree, the more it costs (up to a 50g maximum each time you make changes). You may try Retribution and love it, but later decide you want to tank or heal and make a switch. Or your raid group might have an abundance of tanks one day, and even though you are Protection you go respec Holy and heal for them.

All of these roles are pretty gear-dependant (That is, the gear for Holy is different than tanking gear, which is different from dps gear). In order to be good at all 3 roles late in the game, it is necessary to build up multiple sets of gear. Early on in the game (1-60 or so) you can use MOST of the same gear and fulfill any of the roles adequately. (The main exception to this being that if you are Holy or Prot you want a 1-handed weapon and shield, Retribution a big slow 2-h weapon and no shield.)

So, for now, decide what you think you would like to try, read the appropriate posts and stickies here, and give it a shot! Once you pick a tree, all of us here would be happy to answer more specific questions about the tree you personally chose.

I am new to the Paladin and having a great time playing it.I have found it to be the player i enjoy the most to the point of forgetting to play my others.
Now here is where i get a little confused.
I am spec for Protection. I have all my talent points in protection.
What i don't understand is this. Should i go for gear that is based on Stamina and strength over say intelligence or the other adds.
Icurrently have gear that is in this area. That is most of it has either Stamina or Strenght as the main add. Am i going wrong here and should be looking elsewhere?
any help would be appreicated. I have read threads on talent builds and even printed some as guides. But nothing tells me what gear for say each spec is.

You're doing fine focusing on Stamina and Strength as Prot. Don't worry about the other stats as much in the lower levels. Later on you'll have slightly different priorities like defense rating and whatnot, but for now keep focusing on Str and Sta primarily.

As a tank, you have one job with two parts:
[1] Keep the mobs off the healers (and to a lesser extent the DPS)
[2] Survive until the mobs are all dead

To do this, you need to [1] put out a lot of threat, and [2] have lots of HP, and gear that reduces mobs' ability to take you down quickly.

[1] is largely fueled by holy damage. Before the 3.0.2 patch, this was driven by what is now spellpower. But Blizzard wants tanks to use similar gear, to avoid the spectacle of paladins tanking while wielding dainty little caster swords. So the engine of holy damage is, moving forward, going to be strength.
[2] is both simpler and more complex. The simplest part is HP - get lots of them. Which means lots of stamina. This will serve you through the leveling process. Which is good, because leveling gear doesn't have a lot of the added stats that you need to tank raid bosses (first defense rating, then dodge/block/parry).

You would think that you'd need lots of int and mana regen to keep throwing out spells, but this turns out not to be the case. When you're tanking in a group with someone else healing you, you have a neat ability called "Spiritual Attunement", which gives you mana back from being healed. As for when you aren't in a group, you can always buy more water, but you can't buy +stamina for gear that has +int on it.

Basically, until you are tanking past Sunken Temple (i.e. level 60 and beyond), stamina and strength will do you fine. You'll understand your talents better and have more experience, and we'll all have had time to get used to the new way of doing business. So when you need more answers, answers will be there.
