I can not for the life of me figure out how to gain the ability to wield a sword as a rogue. Anyone care to enlighten the n00b player please?

You 'buy' the skill in a major city. If I recall correctly, you get the abilit to wield swords from 'Woo Ping' in Stormwind. Just go to the nearest large city and ask a guard for the 'weapons trainer'. If the weapons trainer he sends you to doesn't teach you how to wield swords, he should be able to tell you where the trainer who can indeed teach them is located.

That's nothing, wait until you have to learn poisons. Now that's a nice run without a mount.

Yes. This also caused me much confusion when I was starting my rogue. I was all excited when I hit level 10, finally get dual wield, go to wield my sword, can't do it. Spent about 45 minutes trying to figure it out before I finally got it.
Worst part was that I had just left stormwind like an hour before. Grrr.

It's not so bad now. They've changed the boat routes. The boat from Auberdine (just a quick flight or boat ride past the night elf main city) now goes to Stormwind Harbour instead of Menethil. This means you no longer have to make a long run to Ironforge on foot and then take the tram to Stormwind. You can ride the boat directly to Stormwind and take the tram to Ironforge if you want.

I thought they took out learning poisons.
Mental is correct. I was only remembering my poor old nelf rogue's tribulations way back when we had to run in the snow uphill, both ways, to Westfall and Stormwind so we could learn lockpicking and poisons. It was a long run ;(
