Ok, so now we have these cool new toys to shoot up for practice and shot rotations are dead after last patch. Before patch I was auto/steady manually and it felt like good DPS. After the patch I can't find a good groove to get into. I feel like I'm standing there waiting to fire for a second or too quite often; where as before the arrows were flying one after another until mob was dead. The best shot order I think I found is auto/steady/arcane/steady/aimed/steady/auto/ etc. I say think, because I have no DPS meter to judge real numbers.

My question is, what is a solid, easy to read/understand, 3.0 compatible, DPS meter addon? I have searched Curse and found DPS meters there, but I'm looking for a suggestion of which is the most valued with players. Have been on raids and someone has had meters that they show in chatlog as a list of the players ranked in Total DPS, Total damage, Total healing, Total healed and I like the simple chat display of that one, but I dont know the name of that addon.

Also, after I get a DPS meter, what would be best way to test with it? Stop watch and time 1, 2, 3 minutes of dummy shooting? How much time do you think should be spent on each test to get a good baseline of data?

Thanks,
Rob

look into recount.. I think it's a respectable damage meter that breaks down the damage you did and with what ability.
It will present it in a nice pie graph that is easy to understand as well as record max damage, minimum damage and highest crit.

Recount has always had my vote too.

It makes many options possible, yet presents all information in a clear and concise manner.

As far as time goes, something even would be good, though that's all down to you.

I have seen some people hit those things for an hour at a time, before shifting a couple of points in their builds and burning another hour.

Me? I don't have the head for such small numbers, but I do appreciate them and so always ask such folk what results they saw.

I might, because I play in windowed mode, queue up a film and watch that for 10 minutes and leave my character firing away during that time.

Check out Recount on curse: HERE

When you download and run it, you'll probably see the "Main Window" screenshot. To get the "Detail Window" up, just click your named bar.

You'll soon get how it works and see the other windows, as it's quite an intuitive add-on also.

I use recount as well, and omen for the threat meter.

As to how long I shoot, I guage it with my mana bar. When I'm down to about 10% I call off the pet and <ESC> out of the fight. Then I look at the dps numbers in recount. I repeat the test 3 times and average the numbers or put them into a 'spread'. It's spendy to test like this gold wise if you are using pricey ammo. You can use the cheap stuff and then try to buff the numbers by what you normally get with the spendy stuff. You'll still need to do a full test set with the spendy stuff though to get the higher % you multiply the lower numbers by.

Now, your numbers are likely going to be lower than real life unless you can talk your raid party into having a 'practice dummy' test session with you. So you'll likely be unbuffed. If you are doing this for PvP, you'll only get a large ballpark number. In PvP you have so many debuffs and timing factors, as well as player skill differences that the target dummies can only help you optimize any macros or dps, or even you own debuff cycles.

The dummies are great, now if we can just get 'created' ammo to burn on them from some vendor... "This ammo mimicks the Adamantite Stinger, it is only good for use against a test dummy." cost: 50s for 200. Something like that.

gotta love recount. It's really great that you can set it to show "total" damage, so you can break it down to show pet damage, your damage, and then both of your damage added together. Add in the pie charts, and it's golden. It can even help you figure out what other hunters in your raids are doing.

Thanks guys, I got Recount added and will check it out when servers come back again... From what I saw before servers went back down, it looks like what I was looking for.
