My guild is heading off to the above for the first time and it's likely that I'll be the mage tank for the fight. So I was hoping to get a little advice from knowledgeable mages and also based on the changes that 3.0.2 brought it.

I'm currently running a frost spec (0/8/53), but was thinking of switching to various arcane and fire spec to try them out before the expansion. This got me thinking about a potential respec for council, as at the moment I have no points in arcane - which means no +hit for arcane and this isn't something I think I can balance whilst keeping a high level of stamina.

So, onto the questions:
1. Magic Absorbtion - does this cause any issues for the fight? I only ask because I know one of the warlock talents (nether protection is it?) can bugger things up for some reason. Sounds good to me (assuming you can resist the mages attacks), but at the same point I don't want the boss getting bored of me being resistant and running off to kill someone else.

2. I'm thinking of this for the core of an arcane spec. Is it best to put the remaining 7 points in arcane and if so, where? If Incanter's Absorbtion works of other players absorb effects (e.g. PW:Shield) that sounds good for threat and pewpew, prismatic cloak sound good for general reduction in damage taken or theirs student of mind for a bit more mana regen.
Or is incineration worth picking up?

I'm guessing Glyph of Mage Armor and Mana Gem would be best if I'm spell stealing a lot, but any suggestions for others would be welcome.

Hopefully we'll be heading on to Illidan if we get the council down so I'd like to have something that will be reasonable for that encounter too.

Or I guess I could go 11/50/0 and still pick up the arcane +hit talents - hmm indecision strikes...

Also I picked up Ashtongue Talisman of Insight, but I'm not sure if it's worth using from my current frost spec (over Icon of the Silver Crescent and Hex Shrunken Head) or if it would be good for a different spec, so worth keeping.

You will be spellstealing about once every minute or so, you won't be spamming it.

That being said, I would run mage armor, you will want to be doing some dps (when the mage isn't immune to it).

The way that I (and the other mages in the guild do the pull) is to have some stam gear on (around 11k buffed), pop a nightmare seed (+2k hp) get a BoP and run in spamming spellsteal from the left-front side (like / ) the moment the spellsteal goes off and you get the dampen magic buff throw a fireblast and cast some scorches to make sure you hold aggro.

After that work on placing him where you want him, I tend to try to get him on the stairs but sometimes he doesn't budge. Don't get too close or else you will be blown up by his AE. Beyond that, stay out of the AoEs and call out if you get poisoned (luckily you take a lot less damage during any magic casting on you). Just do what you can to keep dpsing him (watch out for when he is spell immune so you don't waste mana) and as soon as you see the dampen magic buff go up spellsteal it (you get the buff for 2 minutes, he puts it up after 1).

If you can't get too close to the hit cap I would at least do 3 pts in arcane to get some +hit.

For Illidan any spec really works, just have to remember to use frostbolt (or arcane) on the fire elementals. That and to pick up an aoe talent or two (blast wave, dragon's breath) if you are the only mage there as the parasites can be difficult if you just use AE.

It's really not. It helps, but there's only one spellsteal you really need to get per pull, and that's the first one. I used to run probably 12% in my tank gear and rarely had trouble. The need for spell hit isn't nearly as urgent as it is on HKM. The buff here lasts 2 minutes and he rebuffs himself every minute. Even if he gets an anti magic shield on him, you should still have 20 seconds or so to resteal it.

Thanks for the tips :)

Went for a mainly arcane spec in the end, we had several wipes on them but only one was caused by me. I missed my initial spell steal so he splatted a healer, the healer was meant to be healing another tank who then died and that mob killed our interupters before we could get the situation under control. After that I dropped a little hp for some more hit :P

I think I'll stick with arcane for the next raid (though I don't know if I'm meant to use MBAM each time they pop or not) as I was tanking so didn't really get to try out the dps side of arcane very much. We went to see Illidan but the server went down before we could get more than one try (also need to sort out resistance gear for next time).

MH later in the week though so I'll probably go fire for that.

Gah, forgot the nightmare seed, I think that would be a good thing to have with me, at one point I didn't get the shield (there's a felhunter somewhere that need a kick) and the nightmare seed probably would've let me live long enough to get the shield as I have ~14k hp in my tank kit.

My guild just downed Council last night. I mage tanked it and it was pretty simple.

I put on my pvp gear and raid buffed was rockin about 14k hp. I only had about... 3% hit.. maybe, but i never had any issues with spell stealing.

The first mage who tried to tank it used the BoP method and ended up getting 1 shotted every time.
I'm frost so all i did was get my elemental out and have him waterbolt the Mage Boss, then right as it hit I mash spell steal, then fireblast/scorch, and it all goes smooth from there. Would definitely suggest this strategy if you're new to the fight. Also as frost on the stand still fights like Gorefiend I was putting out 2500 dps. I also stayed frost for Illidan, and it definitely helped me deal with the parasites. as soon as they spawned, Nova, and ice lance/fireblast. I had a mage helping me sometimes he was arcane. If you're good at targeting them fast arc is nice for it too cause you can shot the parasites with ABar
