Predatory Instincts - wordingFollow

#1 Oct 20 2008 at 9:58 AM Rating: Decent
So... what's the deal with this skill? It says that it "increases your damage from critical strikes by 10%."

Does that mean that your critical strike damage does 10% more? (as in, "increases your critical strike damage by 10%")

...or does it mean that you take 10% more damage from critical strikes (as in, "increases the damage you take from critical strikes by 10%")

...or does it mean that you magically do more damage after being hit with a critical strike? ("increases your damage after a critical strike by 10%")

It's bad wording, and the way they have it now means that you are receiving (from) the critical strike, as opposed (I think) dealing your critical strike.

Anyone else have this issue? Which is it supposed to be?

Predatory Instincts no longer works on Bear Form or Dire Bear form and now reduced damage by 10/20/30 (Source )

You do 10% more damage on crits in cat form and take 30% less AoE damage in cat form.

As in, your crits do 210% of your regular hits instead of 200% damage.

Are you sure about that latter remark, Friar?

Blizz normally states things like "increases your critical strike damage bonus ...". Here they state "increases damage from critical strikes ...".

I was under the impressions that that means 220% instead of 200%, which I would say is more likely seeing the tier the talent is in. I did not test it though, perhaps you did?

I would have to agree with the Friar about the math.

It also only works in cat form.

So 210% crit in cat form is the answer. It is not a tanking talent. It does not help bear or dire bear form at all.

Just to help clarify.

I think this is the first time I've disagreed with Rarebeast, but I agree with Immunios on this. The way it's worded, "increases damage from critical strikes by 10%" makes it sound (to me) like the total damage from the hit is increased by 10%, i.e. a critical strike hitting for 2,000 should hit for 2,200.

Considering the talent still says it effects bear and dire bear there is no way to know beyond testing. Blizz needs an English lesson. They can be rather obtuse in their descriptions.

Never assume that a Blizzard tooltip or description is correct - the Imp.MotW tooltip is still wrong!

Having said that, in this case, I was wrong :)

Here is a post from ElitistJerks :-

I went out and did some tests just because it wasn't fully clear (at least to me) whether the Predatory Instincts change was just for the AoE damage bit or the entire talent since its tooltip still reads "While in Cat Form, Bear Form, or Dire Bear Form, increases your damage from melee critical strikes by 10% and reduces the damage taken from area of effect attacks by 30%."

~6-7 mins on Servant of Allistarj (since target dummies always end up with random crap on them from others testing nearby, Whirlwind applied Blood Frenzy etc). This was doing nothing but autoattacking and Mangle spamming, using Berserk on every cooldown. Tiger's Fury was not used.

Cat Form Auto-attack
227 hits (Average damage: 330)
158 crits (Average damage: 725)
725 / 330 = 2.197

Cat Form Mangle
82 hits (Average damage: 1480)
67 crits (Average damage: 3255)
3255 / 1480 = 2.199

Bear Form Auto-attack
106 hits (Average damage: 705)
63 crits (Average damage: 1409)
1409 / 705 = 1.999

Bear Form Mangle
61 hits (Average damage: 1571)
41 crits (Average damage: 3140)
3140 / 1571 = 1.999

So yea, the critical strike damage is now only Cat Form as well.

edit: Helm was unequipped to keep metagem interaction out of it. There's no reason that shouldn't still work in Bear Form, however.

So yes, it is infact 220% damage when you crit in cat with predatory instinct (and only 200% in bear now).

Sorry for the misinformation earlier :)

No problem there, Friar. I am just happy it works out the way it does because I like to believe that the talent is good for my soloing career /smile.

See? Blizzard should fix their wording. With all the money they're making, they should be able to hire an English major or two...
