I am going Ret Paladin and I just hit level 16 almost 17. Since the update where should I put my talents points in the Ret tree? I dont understand any of the talents and whats the best Ret build. So far ive put 5 points in to the parrying.

I was level 39 by the time the patch hit so I just dumped my points into what I knew would work, but the tree has remained mostly the same in the early goings... to me anyways. This is my current tree:

http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/classes/paladin/talents.html?tal=000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000052320510003312301130000000

I would say now that you've maxed Parrying, go:

2/2 Improved Judgements
3/3 Heart of the Crusader
1/1 Seal of Command (get a nice high damage and slow 2h weapon now)
5/5 Conviction
3/3 Crusade -OR- 3/3 Sanctified Seals (both are good, just depends on if you want more crits or slightly more baseline damage)
1/2 Vindication -OR- Improved Blessing of Might (doesn't really matter)
3/3 Two-Handed Weapon Specialization
1/1 Sanctified Retribution
2/2 Vindication -OR- Improved Blessing of Might (basically, max whichever one you put a point into earlier)
3/3 Vengeance
2/2 Vindication/Improved Blessing of Might (whichever you didn't max earlier)

at this point I went

3/3 Judgements of the Wise
1/1 Repentance
1/2 The Art of War

and that's where I'm at now. You'll basically want to max everything on the tree below Vengeance and your last 5 points should go into Divine Strength in the Prot tree.

That's what I think anyways. Defer to any more experienced pallys in the forums as my highest pally up to this point is level 44.

PS:
This is most likely the build you'll want at level 70 unless your guild doesn't have another pally with Blessing of Kings and they ask you to take it, in which case move the 5 points from Divine Strength to BoK and Improved BoK.

Why haven't you put any points into Sanctified seals? Isn't it a straight 3% increase to damage?

Tier 1:
Skip Deflection – 0/5
Take Benediction – 5/5

Why – You are a DPS class wearing heavy armor. While Parry will help you avoid damage – your main goal is to inflict damage. Having cheap (low mana) judgments will allow you to do more damage with your mana bar – plus you can heal anything you didn’t parry…

Tier 2:

Improved Judgments – 2/2
Heart of the Crusader – 3/3
Improved Blessing of Might – 2/2

Why – All of these will help you dish out more damage. However – notice there are 7 points here. You want to put 5 points into Tier 2, then quickly jump to tier 3 and get Seal of Command. After you get SoC – just come back and finish off the tier.

Tier 3:

Conviction – 5/5
Seal of Command – 1/1

That should take you into your mid 20s.

Your goal is to get to Vengeance as fast as possible. I like the build that’s posted above, but I didn’t level under Ret (with the current patch) so – coming from it in the upper 60s, I took some talents that he didn’t take, but I’d argue that many of the lower talents I would have skipped and come back for. (Example: Vindication – Not a bad ability, but not needed at lower lvls)

Once you get judgments of the wise, benediction is obsolete. At that point, you should switch those points to parry. 10% cheaper judgments are irrelevant when you never fall below 50% mana.

You know Tsarducci - I didn't think of that.

How does it affect your overall efficiency? My guess is not much.

I've been leading fights like this:

1. Put up Crusader
2. Judge Heals (also enters into combat)
3. Drop Consecration
4. Storm
5. C. Strike
6. Judge Heals (To get mana)
7. It's dead, Melee swings kill it, or Hammer it (Dead)

That means I'm pretty much wasting 5 points... Nice...

Yeah, I kinda put the points in before planning it out exactly, and I figure I won't hit 70 before WotLK hits so I'll make due until I hit 80, then re-spec. I was originally building my pally for tanking, but since the buff to Ret in 3.0 I've considered staying Ret. So that's kinda two reasons why I haven't re-spec'd to take Sanctified Seals yet. But I did take it in my level 70 build, so it's not like I don't think it's good.

Also, it technically isn't a straight increase because all it does is increase the chance for you to crit with spells and attacks by 3%. Crusade is the talent that increases damage done by 3% and damage done against Humans, Undeads, Elementals and Demons by another 3%. That one I do have right now on my pally, and I think both are pretty mandatory in a 70 build. But when you're trying to get to Divine Storm as quickly as possible, sometimes you've gotta skip some talents and come back to them later.

As for Parrying vs Benediction, I think it's a matter of personal preference. Both keep downtime... well, down. I find right now at 44 (I don't have Divine Storm or Crusader Strike yet) this is my current rotation against mobs.

1) Seal of Command
2) Get close and drop Consecration
3) Judgement of Light for mana (already 98% or so now) and for healing effect
4) Auto-attack until mob drops under 30%, Hammer of Wrath
5) If still alive (very rare), judge again and I'm at full mana and 90%+ health

I would say for leveling and such, Parrying's probably a bit more useful than Benediction after you get Judgements of the Wise. But for raiding it'll be the other way around since as Ret you shouldn't be MT, and as such you don't need to parry so might as well take what helps you keep doing more damage for longer. If you're off-tanking then Parrying may be useful... but whatever floats your boat.
