Monitoring ProcsFollow

Hi folks,

I finally got around to actually logging on with my Mage, and after being fire for such a long time (and being supposedly locked into it with the spellfire set), I can now try a frost build again (changes from fire damage to school independent spell power allowed this).

Firstly, I'm quite happy ... while doing dailies, I was able to wade through countless mobs before running out of mana ... lots more control and survivability, water elemental is cool, and comes out at the slightest hint of trouble (or even when I just feel like companionship). Nukage is not quite as high as I experienced with fire, but that's fine, I expected it, and am perfectly comfortable with the damage tradeoff against utility.

Now the kicker. Deep frost has some nice proc based toys .. mainly fingers of frost and brain freeze. Now previously, is was pretty easy to see when to fire off a shatter combo because ... well ... the mob stayed rooted on a block of ice, so as for trying to figure out if the 300% damage and maxed out crit chance would apply, that was no problem.

Now, with FoF, the benefits are the same, actually even more, because I can now fire off 2 quick lances, and be guarenteed (well almost) of a 2k+ strike. Problem is, with standard UI, it's a touch difficult to know that FoF has now proc'd, and I found myself missing out. Same goes for my free instant fireball.

So, my question is, what mods are you guys using to prompt you (if at all) that these random events are firing. I see it as a pretty hefty chunk of damage, and wouldn't want to miss out on it.

As an aside, Hot Streak is in the same boat ... so whether I go frost or fire, I'm going to need similar alert mechanisms.

I use msbt (mik's scrolling battle text) as my scrolling battle text. I set up a trigger to tell me (and make a noise "FATALITY") when my hot streak procs that can work as well for FoF or anything.

@People who use SCT
Can you make an event in the event section for Fingers of Frost?

I picked up msbt for this reason too, so I could see easily when FoF and Brain Freeze proc.

I've turned off the actual scrolling combat text part of it, because all of those numbers flying across the screen annoy me.

For mbst both FoF and BF are already in there, so any time they proc you get a message across your screen to let you know.

I recommend at least having it show you your misses/resists.

Oooooo, does that feature of MSBT actually work properly now ... I encountered some problems with having MSBT show standard combat text ... I think it didn't show incoming damage by default, I kept having to go into the standard UI combat text tab and turn it on again every time I logged on.

I much prefer the look and feel of the standard combat text, over any of the SCT mods out there (The fact that damage scrolls above the mob you are damaging is the clincher for me), but there is some really usefull information presented with those addons which I would like to make use of.

I'll download the latest version of MSBT, and see if it works for me now.

There's a couple of tick boxes on the first page of msbt to enable the blizzard combat text, seems to be working ok for me (but I just enable basic healing and damage, not sure how it reacts to the other default options).

Pretty sure you can put it wherever you want to through the settings. But maybe not, as I have never really messed with knowing where the damage was exactly going (I already know what mob I am damaging/targeting).

Yeah, those tick boxes ... ticking them to say use blizzards combat text works perfectly fine ... until I log out, and back in. What happens (happened) was that MSBT's text didn't appear, and the Blizz outgoing damage appeared, but the checkbox on the normal wow interface settings page for combat text is off for incoming damage... ticking it on sorts it out, so it's not a huge trainsmash, it was just annoying to have to do it every time I logged on ... annoying enough to stop using MSBT at the time.

However, maybe it's changed, I'll check it out again tonight.

Thanks for the replies chaps ...

oh, just thought I'd mention this ... I re-installed ELkBuffBars the other night, and started fiddling ... turns out that this is quite a gem of an addon. I created a group, called it "Procs", defined a filter, and selected "Fingers of Frost" and "Brain Freeze" to add to that filter (I also added "Sudden Death" for my warrior, so that displays in there as well). I then positioned that new group to appear just to the left of my character. Now, whenever one of those buffs are applied, it's added to the buff list, and displayed nice and clearly for me, together with duration ... very handy.

I also created a group, made the subject of the group "Target", and set it so that it displays buffs and debuffs. Now I can easily monitor my targets buffs and debuffs, as well as durations etc.
