Just a "Little" Underwhelmed by BerserkFollow

I'll admit it, I am. Last night I specced into it and went to do some dailies. I'll be honest I wasn't entirely impressed by it. Sure it's nice to have my Bear Form Mangle act like Swipe for a few moments. It's also nice to have the energy cost of my Cat Form abilities reduced and it's also great to have an ability that performs just like my PvP CC-breaking trinket. But other than that, I honestly think it needs something more, like a buff to our damage output % for the 15 seconds it is active (for example).

Now don't get me wrong. I have every intention of keeping Berserk...when I'm lv 80. But today, when I get home from work, I'm respeccing only as far as 5/5 Rend and Tear so I can put that 1 point back into Omen of Clarity.

**Disclaimer**

I LOVE my new feral tree. I absolutely, truly do. I've spent like 300g already in respecs fine tuning my tanking and dps specs and tested each out in raid settings with my guild. It's fabulous, miraculous, pure epic awesomeness that I just was not anticipating prior to 3.0 being implemented. And it will only get better when patch 3.1 brings us Dual Speccing. I just felt a need to share with the Druid forum here while I sit in the office at work bored and avoiding the front counter because it's slow and the help is competent enough that I don't have to worry they'll let the store burn down for the 5 minutes I'm back here.

As a Feral Druid myself, I can relate.

I even went as far as to not get Berserk with the free respec. I just couldn't justify taking it over Omen of Clarity. And I ditched Rend and Tear as well. It's probably very nice when/if you're tanking or deepeesing (is that even a word?), but for soloing and PvP, I just can't see it. Theoretically, it would make a Pounce -> Mangle -> Shred -> Ferocious Bite combo lethal, but my experience tells me that I use Maim more than Ferocious Bite and sometimes, due to not having Brutal Impact, I don't get off the Shred after the Mangle, which would make the talent nigh useless. I figure I'll be soloing a bit come expansion time, so I grabbed this build.

Haven't played my Druid all that much, though. The changes to the class just seem so... minor. At least compared to my Warlock and Paladin. I'll probably return once my UI compilation is back up and running. I'll definitely return for the expansion.

Until then, I'm leveling up my Paladin. Smiley: grin

Edit: I just noticed that Mangle doesn't give a damage bonus to Shred anymore. Bummer.

On the contrary, the changes I think were significant. I have been pushing incredible DPS in this spec so far. Sure it's been in nerfed raid zones but going from 800 DPS in pre-3.0 ZA to 1200 DPS post-3.0 ZA can't all be because of the 30% decrease in raid mob health. At least that's how I think of it, maybe it is just all because of the nerf.

I specced Beserk to try it out but will probably respec back to OOC soon.

For tanking, it is amazing! I had another druid accuse me of taunting off him last night in Hyjal - all I did was hit beserk and spam mangle & maul and my threat went flying past his. For DPS, it just feels weak. Popping Adrenaline Rush on my rogue feels like a lot more of a buff than Beserk does (double energy regen vs. half ability cost). Having said that, my DPS during that time is buffed greatly, it just doesn't "feel" as impressive as the rogue talent.

I was messing around with Berserk today when I was tanking Headless Horseman for some friends.

Couple of things I learned early on that have an enormous impact on its use in bear form:

1) Activate it when Mangle is off cooldown. It doesn't reset your Mangle cooldown, so if you hit Berserk right after Mangle, you've just wasted 1/5 - 1/4 of the benefit.

2) Activate it when you're sure you've got enough Rage to get through the full 15 seconds without going OOR. It's not something I'd use as an opener, but popping it right before the second or third Mangle in your threat sequence represents a huge boost to your tps.

Unfortunately, today was my first day tanking anything since the patch, and like the dunce that I am I completely forgot that Mangle is on a 4.5 second cooldown now. I was losing out on a pretty big chunk of threat, but using the same threat rotation as I was using pre-patch, my tps went from 800-900 to ~1200, up to 1800-1900 with Berserk + Mangle spam.

For leveling from 70-80 I'd rather have OOC, but in pvp, Berserk is pretty nice. I took out my friend's prot warrior who is better geared than my feral drood. What helped is that you can use beserk while stealth and feral charge while stealthed and still pull off a ravage or pounce. Followed by mangle and rake (to give FB it's enourmous crit chance) and something is gonna die. Using it as an opener for some burst isn't a terrible idea.
