SV in the Upcoming patchFollow

#1 Oct 12 2008 at 5:32 PM Rating: Decent
Hey, I was playing around on the PTR on my hunter and I have been reading some forum posts on specs in the upcoming patch. I was mainly trying out BM vs. SV and from what ive seen and read about BM it is still dps king (until we get our massive amount of haste from 80 gear, then it might even out). Now my question is this... Is anyone going to be staying survival once the patch comes? EW is self buff only, Hunting party is nice but is it a reason to get a raid spot. I personally like survival becuase i liked being able to give people that extra bit of AP but now that EW is self buff, is it really worth it to stay SV? (from a raiding perspective of course)

Sorry if this has already been discussed.

I have been wondering the same thing myself.
I have been playing with the new talent trees a bit, and for some reason, I keep coming back to SV.
I leveled my Hunter to 60 as BM, then switched to MM. I've done a few KZ runs with that spec and did well, but decided to go back to BM for a bit more ease of solo play. Not much difference in overall dps, but my mana pool has thanked me for it.
I haven't ever played with SV. But, after looking at the new talent trees, I think I will go SV for raids/instances, and BM for questing. Given that we will be able to dual-spec, I think it'll be a viable option.
Only thing about that, is I wouldn't be able to keep an exotic pet when I would re-spec. From what I understand, you can put your exotic pet in the stable before you re-spec, and when you go back to BM, he'll be there ready to go.
I'm not quite sure if SV will be the best or worst dps tree for hunters, but I really like the utility of being able to trap more effectively for better CC.
At least... Those are my thoughts...

Hunting Party, what raid member wouldn't want it?

Specifically speaking to yuppley what kinds of SV Build were you thinking of?
I was thinking of something like this http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?talent=cZ0eVZe00iozIhxuhhsh

Any thoughts?

Probably This, as you get Hunting Party and Explosive Shot, and the talents that interact with Serpent Sting, which, afaik, will be used just as much as the other specials for DPS.

Ok, cool. What were you thinking for a 70 build with the new patch?

Probably this for SV, though I really wouldn't reccomend going SV for PvE when the patch hits.

I take it BM for PvE then? lol

At this point BM/MM is still the highest dps build. There are several variants of said build. When the ptr first came out SV was ignorantly sick in terms of dps. Sadly explosive shot has been nerfed into oblivion. While the talent builds we will be seeing on tuesday are very nice, they are still missing a lot, namely 10 more talent points.

I agree that having one SV hunter and one MM hunter on a raid would be nice, but for a lot of guilds that isnt realistic. For personal dps BM wins, hands down for level 70. At 80 with T7 gear, who knows. There is a thread for wrath builds that i would look at for spec ideas.

Agreed, BM/MM is and will be still the highest DPS output build.

Sadly, SV has turned into a mediocre DPS Mana Battery at the moment. With the nerfing of Explosive Shot, as well as a total lack of synergy from the talents themselves (are we meant to be up close fighters, or super snipers?), our dps has suffered greatly. MM is now the new "Raid Spec" as it were, to add more damage to the raid. TSA is now a raid buff, and will be taking the place of EW. SV's really only benefit to being in the raid is their Hunting Party talent, but one Ret Paladin or Shadow Priest will fix that problem easily.

Hopefully they'll do some more tweaking, but from what I gathered at Blizzcon, they pretty much avoided Hunter questions all together and it seemed as if they're waiting till after the expansion before they actually do anything for the hunters.

I'll still be going SV as long as it proves useful in our raids and adds a decent amount of damage. I currently hit my max DPS at 2050+ on Brutallus, which is a hell of an achievement for a SV hunter imo. Still a few upgrades for me of course, but with the expansion around the corner, I'm not holding my breathe either.

Yeah MM looks pretty cool, but how would a rotation work without haste gear for MM, now that Steady shot is 2 sec cast? Just unload the instant attacks and put in a steady shot until their CD's are up?

Edit: spellings!
