Yeah, I'm pretty happy to have the chance to raid and min/max with something new. Honestly I find combat slightly more dull than Muti and prefer the attention needs of Muti, I'm a weirdo. But in the end I'd spec feral-holy-bandage if that's what would be the optimal help to the raid. Whatever I need to do to push progression is what I'm going to do.
As noted above, our role is DPS and if you are not striving to optimize your damage output then you are gimping your raid, even if it is "just a few DPS." If your raid/guild is more casual, or social, or whatever, that DPS difference might not be a big deal. But MH/BT and especially SWP are no joke. You had better bring your best of the best or don't bother. Wiping on Brut 'cause you're 1k under the DPS budget is not how I like to spend my raid nights ;)
Just to be clear: That's not to say that casual/social guilds are "bad" or anything, everyone enjoys this game differently. But the difference between "hardcore progression" and "casual t4/5" is important to note. So, um, yeah!
As to the so called "double standard": I doubt this will be a serious issue. I usually tell PUGs what my DPS average is and that seems to work fine. If someone isn't taking you because of spec prejudice, then you're probably better off anyway. Remember: Player Skill > Spec/Gear.
And, news from Blizzcon: They'll be buffing Combat again with 3.0, if only slightly. GC confirmed in one of the Q&As (after the Class Dev panel iirc) that they are striving to keep Muti and Combat about equal in personal DPS and rDPS contribution. So, 1 each is my expectation for most raid groups. Yay!
