First Character?
Skinning and Mining or Skinning and Herbalism

Not interested in farming?
Tailoring and Enchanting - 3 piece tailoring craftables, Self-Enchant
Alchemy and Herbalism - Trinket/Elixirs, Money
Engineering and Mining - Goggles and Money
Jewelcrafting and Mining - Own Gems, Money

I have a lvl 44 warrior, 31 mage, 18 priest and this lvl 20 warlock. Like I said this is my 1st warlock and was wondering what the 2 best professions would be. I do farm. would that be my best route for this player? Even though i have 4 characters i'm still new to WOW. My thanks for all the help!

FreeTrial is on the right track.

What do you intend to do when you get max level?

Raiding? Enchanting + Jewelcrafting/Engineering/Tailoring (it's best complemented by Tailoring, though - and depending on Drums in the xpac, maybe Leatherworking)

PvP? Engineering + Enchanting/Jewelcrafting

Engineering and Tailoring both will get you profession specific flying mounts (engineering now, tailoring with expansion).
Enchanting nets you ring enchants.
Jewelcrafting is a nice moneymaker, and also has several BoP gems and trinkets.
Leatherworking provides some nice trinkets, and can make decent money on some servers.
Engineering gets you goggles, and plenty of toys.
Tailoring gets you some decent craftables, as well as netherweave nets and armor kits for casters.
Alchemy gets you some trinkets, as well as plenty of potions (when combined with herbalism), but is generally not that great a profession for warlocks.

Man I'm way out of touch on this i guess. Is PVP where you can fight each other? Or fight computer monsters? Raiding is where you just go around and kill and loot right? Help this newbie out please!! My daughter bought WOW for me and i popped it in and just started playing. I love the game and am not playing to the correct ability I should be I guess. It took me almost a year to get my warrior to lvl 44 for crying out loud. As far as when I max anyone of my characters out I have no idea what to do with any of them. Again thank you for all your help.

Yep, that's pretty much it in a nutshell. :P

PvP is Player vs. Player, so it refers to battlegrounds and arenas and world PvP.

PvE or raiding, it pretty much as you say, kill stuff and loot.

Of course, you don't actually have to have any professions at all. ;) It just helps you along here and there.

Drums are nerfed in WotLK, 2minute debuff that prevents 100% uptime.

I guess it all depends on: Are you planning on getting your other alts to 70(80?).
Here's my suggestions for each:

Warrior: Engineering/MiningExcellent Tanking Goggles/Trinkets/Mote Extractor

Mage: Tailoring/Enchanting
Spellfire Set/Ring Enchants

Priest: Alchemy/Herbalism
Amazing trinket for mana pots/mats for elixirs

Warlock: Jewelcrafting/Mining
Gems/Prospecting

FreeTrial, remember that Spellfire, FSW and PMC sets are all straight spellpower in xpac, not +shadow/fire/etc. Suggesting Tailoring based on level 70 gear is a bad way to go about it if OP plans to go to 80 at any time.

There is no real "best" profession for any class, just things that don't work for them (e.g., casters taking blacksmithing is usually a no-no). There are certain perks to each profession, though, and it is all based on playstyle, and certain professions work better for different aspects of play (i.e., engineering is almost requisite for PvP).

Personally, I went tailor/enchanter on my warlock and mining/jewelcrafting on my shaman - and really, I see no benefits that outweigh the other, save cashflow (JC tends to be better in that department than enchanting/tailoring).

Of course, warriors should go with engineering, in any case. Blacksmithing kinda sucks right now. =\

I was actually unaware of the removal of class specific damage, but if that's in WotLK that's still a month before the change. If you choose Tailoring get it to 375 but don't bother with Spellfire or Frozen Shadoweave, gear will be obsolete in a couple levels, not worth the time to farm the mats

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A "warlock-specific" PROFESSION. PERIOD. Anyone who says there is, lies.

There are two possible reasons for choosing a profession: to make stuff you can use; or to make gold. Too often, the two reasons are incompatible. If you choose two professions that appear to be compatible with each other like mining/jewelcrafting you will find that you will lose gold, even while you are making those rings for yourself. The same holds for mining/engineering, herbalism/Alchemy, etc. Gathering skills make you gold. Crafting skills make you poor. What class you are has nothing to do with it.

I actually just dropped Tailoring for Herbalism and as a Warlock Herbalism is amazing. I can farm the Trees in skettis for hours without stopping as 56/0/5, occasional Dark Pact is all. Enchanting/Herbalism is well worth it, and the 1200 Health over 5sec HoT is nothing to laugh at either.

Wingsofscion's choices only apply when you get to max level. Don't choose a crafting skill until then, unless you want to bleed gold freely, or if crafting rather than making gold is your goal. Remember that gold will buy you almost any crafted item until you get to high levels, except for engineering stuff.

With very limited exceptions, of course. Aquadynamic Fish Attractors ftw. lol
